Job overview

ReConnect is a nationally acclaimed specialist parent-infant service based in Buckinghamshire Adult Mental Health Directorate. 

ReConnect is a county-wide service for adults who are also parents of children under the age of 2 and who present as a risk to their child. 

Successful candidate will work as a member of the multidisciplinary team providing specialist assessments and long-term therapeutic support (MBT) to patients referred into adult mental health services.  

Patients referred to the service often have complex needs (these often include childhood history of abuse & neglect/mental health/personality disorder/substance misuse/domestic abuse or previous experience of severe parenting breakdown resulting in the permanent removal a child to alternative care).

The service aims to support parents to retain care of their child by offering interventions to reduce risks.

This role will require you to travel between rural community bases across Buckinghamshire You must therefore be comfortable with driving for work purposes and able to travel freely within the hours of the role. Applicants must have a full valid driving licence and have access to a vehicle for work. Adjustments can be considered in line with the Equality Act 2010 where required.

Main duties of the job

You will be expected to carry out assessments of parents referred to the service including assessment of risks posed to the child(ren), parental mental health needs and assess the quality of the parent-child relationship. Therapeutic work offered to parents includes individual (mentalisation based treatment) therapy, group therapy and video interaction guidance. The service uses Mentalisation Based-Treatment as its main therapeutic model. Specialist supervision and training is available to support the post-holder in this work.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To work as a MBT Therapist within the ReConnect Service in Buckinghamshire Adult Mental Health Directorate.

The post-holder will hold a small caseload of patients referred to the service and delivering a range of therapeutic interventions as a member of the ReConnect Team, including some specialist parent-child interventions.

The post-holder will be expected to conduct assessments of parental mental health, identify risks that the parent poses to the child, and carry out assessments of the quality of the parent-child relationship.

The post-holder will be expected to offer individual sessions to parents within a Mentalization-based Treatment (MBT) framework and to offer treatments aimed at improving the quality of the parent-child relationship.

The post-holder will be expected to take a role in developing networks and managing interface with social care teams within the locality. Good communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential to

this post.

The post-holder will be expected to work autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the team’s policies and procedures.

The post-holder will play part in service development and evaluation.

Qualifications – Academic/Skills/Professional

Essential criteria
  • Registered RMN/Social Worker/OT/ Psychotherapist/Psychologist/Family therapist
  • Training in adult Mentalisation-Based Treatment
Desirable criteria
  • Training in specialist parenting assessments
  • Training in attachment interventions

Knowledge Requirements

Essential criteria
  • Well developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
  • Good organisational and time management skills, ability to plan and prioritise own workload
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in specific difficult to treat groups and/or children with attachment difficulties
