Job overview

The departments of Urology at NUH and KMH are committed to a long-term partnership and as such the candidate will have the opportunity to participate in cross-site working. The Urology Centre at Nottingham City Hospital consists of a dedicated Outpatients Department, a lithotripter suite, three urology operating theatres and office accommodation. At King’s Mill Hospital, there are a wide range of outpatient and diagnostic facilities and both day case and inpatient surgical capacity.

We are looking for a full-time consultant specialising in general urology with an interest in BPH. The possibility of other specialist interests will also be considered. There is a mature BPH service at both King’s Mill Hospital and Nottingham City Hospital and it is intended to provide mentoring to the appointee by the experienced established consultants at both sites. We have plans to expand the BPH service and welcome applicants who have an interest developing contemporary BPH surgical techniques.

Main duties of the job

  • Give advice to GP’s
  • Contribution to service improvements
  • Closely cooperate with other all specialities
  • Support trainees / clinical development fellows
  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.
  • Vetting referrals to ensure the most appropriate appointment / test is performed.
  • To participate actively in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
  • To have responsibility for ensuring active participation
  • The job plan will include at least 2 operative sessions per week, key urological diagnostic procedures (such as urodynamics, cystoscopy, prostate biopsy) and outpatient clinics.
  • The successful applicant should be fully competent in core urology.
  • Core urology is the essence and sub speciality interest that which complements the existing post holders will be encouraged.
  • The post holder may also be asked to do sessions at Newark hospital.
  • There will be a 1 in 14 on call commitment at Nottingham city Hospital.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to be aware of local policies and procedures

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview
  • Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or equivalent (FRCS Urology)
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate thesis
  • MD/MSc

Clinical experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience requisite to meeting all aspects of the job plan
  • Extensive practical Urological experience
Desirable criteria
  • At least five years supervised training in an appropriate SpR equivalent training programme
  • Demonstrable competence and commitment to sub speciality interests [BPH]

Management & administrative experience

Essential criteria
  • Commitment to Continuing Medical Education and the requirements of Clinical Governance and Audit

Teaching

Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrable ability as a teacher with evidence of training for the role

Research

Desirable criteria
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals
