Job overview

Exciting opportunities for senior trainees in Anaesthesia to do something different: Senior Clinical Fellow in  Anaesthesia.

Anticipated start date is Aug 2024 although start dates may be flexible. We will consider applicants seeking to work less-than-full-time. The post would suit an individual seeking Out of Programme for Experience (OOPE) an individual looking for post-CCT experience. Post-CCT applicants may have the option to act up as consultant with consultant support and supervision towards the end of the Fellowship period. The post will include the provision of out-of-hours  Anaesthetic services at Kings Mill Hospital under the supervision of Consultants in Anaesthetics.

You will have a named educational supervisor. 25% of time will be for supporting non-clinical activity e.g. research, training, education, administration, project work, meetings, etc. 75% will be clinical, including on-call commitment. In addition, you will have 10 days of study leave allowance and a study budget

Main duties of the job

Participate in the provision of an emergency  Anaesthetic service and take part in the on-call rota.

This includes:

  • Resuscitation, stabilisation and intubation of critically unwell patients outside of the operating theatre environment 
  •  Assessing critically unwell patients referred for Critical Care admission in the Emergency Department and wards
  •  Transfer level 2/3 patients safely (intra and inter-hospital)
  •  Participate in the educational and clinical governance within the department
  • Participate in continuing professional development activities in order to maintain knowledge and skill
  • Maintain professional standards and obligations as set out by the General Medical Council (GMC) and comply in
    particular with the GMC’s guidance on ‘Good Medical Practice’
  • Provision of a service to Sherwood Forest Hospitals, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department
  • Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences
  • Responsibilities for carrying out teaching duties as required and contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and
    continuing medical education activity

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Current experience of working within the NHS
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in critical care, including airway management and resuscitation.
  • At least 3 years of Critical Care Medicine / Intensive Care Medicine / Anaesthesia experience
  • Completion of Stage 1(CT3+) anaesthesia and/or ICM training programme (or equivalent)
  • Independently mange ASA 1-2 cases
Desirable criteria
  • CCT

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS.
  • Full registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC).
  • Completion of relevant post-graduate examination(s) e.g. FFICM, FRCA.
  • ALS.
Desirable criteria
  • APLS
  • ALS Instructor status
  • Final FRCA

Management and Administrative Experience

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of the current structure of Health Services
Desirable criteria
  • Management experience

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • A demonstrable interest in teaching.
  • Evidence of teaching medical students, nursing or paramedical staff.

Research

Essential criteria
  • Completed at least one audit or quality improvement project related to Critical Care.
  • Able to appraise research.
  • Understanding of the principles of audit, quality improvement and clinical governance.
Desirable criteria
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals

Other

Essential criteria
  • Demonstration of interest and commitment to theme of Fellowship selected.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to write clear, evidence based papers in plain English.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, being able to work in a multi-disciplinary team, with commitment to collaboration, supporting freedom of expression, being accepting and respectful.
  • Enthusiasm, motivation, self-drive, and being a good ‘team player’.
