Senior Hand Surgery Fellow

NHS Medical & Dental: Senior Clinical Fellow

Job overview

Applications are invited from Trauma and Orthopaedic or Plastic Surgery Senior Trainees for a Senior Hand Fellow post within the Nottingham Hand Unit at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, which is covered by the Medical and Dental Staff Terms and Conditions of Service. The current timetable and learning opportunities are equivocal to when this post was previously a nationally appointed Advanced Training Post in Hand Surgery. We seek to appoint a candidate specifically interested in advanced training in Hand surgery.

This fixed term post is for a six or twelve-month period (twelve months preferable) from October 2024 or sooner. This post will be based at both the Queen’s Medical Centre and the Nottingham Treatment Centre within Nottingham University Hospitals.

The successful applicant will join the Hand Consultant team within the Orthopaedic directorate, which consists of four full time and three part-time Hand Surgery Consultants. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with all of the consultants, covering routine and complex hand and wrist trauma, elective surgery alongside specialist brachial plexus/ peripheral nerve surgery. Specific areas of interest will be accommodated where feasible.

Main duties of the job

Day to day work will involve hand fracture clinics, elective clinics, hand and wrist trauma lists and elective surgery. There is a separate out-of-hours service for hands provided by both orthopaedic and plastic surgery consultants. Successful applicants will join the supervising orthopaedic hand consultant for their on-call commitments, including weekdays and weekends. The hand fellow will be on call only for hands, will be non-resident out of hours, and will act as an intermediary between the on call registrar and hand consultant, essentially performing a sub consultant grade on call.

Research is encouraged.  The Fellow will have the opportunity to collaborate in projects being undertaken at the Evidence Based Centre for Hand Surgery, located here in Nottingham. Involvement in supervised research projects is encouraged and preparation for the FESSH and BSSH hand surgery diplomas is also supported.

Working for our organisation

Nottingham University Hospital is a busy Major Trauma Centre. The Hand Surgery Service is shared between Trauma and Orthopaedics and Plastic Surgery, working collaboratively at the Queen’s Medical Centre and Nottingham Treatment Centre. The fellowship is run by Trauma and Orthopaedics but the opportunity to have interface training with our Plastics hand surgeons are present and encouraged. We welcome applicants from either Trauma and Orthopaedics or Plastics background.
