Applications are invited from Optometry undergraduate students due to graduate in 2025 for this full time, two year fixed term post.

The successful applicant will undertake their pre-registration period within the hospital setting. On successful completion of the Scheme for Registration they will progress to a newly qualified optometrist role for the remainder of the fixed term.

This is an excellent opportunity to undertake the pre-registration period in a large teaching hospital with a varied and interesting caseload.

Once the pre-registration period has been successfully completed the newly qualified optometrist will work independently within the department. In addition to core optometry roles, extended role clinical experience will be available and the transition will be fully supported by the department. An optometry degree and GOC registration is required.

The pre-registration optometrist will contribute to the delivery of a range of core clinical optometric services to the highest standards of quality and care under the supervision of qualified optometrists and undertake administrative responsibilities to support the smooth running of the hospital optometry service

Working closely with the clinical lead for optometry and principal supervisor to plan a programme of work to develop clinical knowledge and skills in order to pass the College of Optometrists professional qualifying examinations. This may include placements within community practice to gain further experience in routine eye examinations and dispensing. A structured support programme is in place to support the demanding requirements of the pre-registration period.

The department provides teaching for medical students, pre-registration optometrists, post graduate medics and other health care professionals. The post holder will contribute to these teaching responsibilities.

The successful candidate will be working with the multidisciplinary team in the Ophthalmology Department comprising of Orthoptists, Optometrists, Ophthalmologists, Technicians, OSPs, the nursing and admin teams.

Ophthalmology Services include eye casualty, day case, in-patient and outpatient facilities. It has strong links to the University of Nottingham through research and works closely with the regional Diabetic Eye Screening Service. We have a large team of Consultant Ophthalmologists, who provide outpatient and surgical services in a full range of Ophthalmology sub-speciality clinics.

The post holder will be required to work Monday to Friday within core service hours

The job role includes variety of clinical and administrative responsibilities which you will need to efficiently manage alongside completion of the scheme for registration.

Excellent time management skills are compulsory in order that the post holder can effectively comply with their day to day duties.

Clinical Responsibilities include undertaking, under supervision, core optometric clinical work including refraction, visual fields analysis, spectacle dispensing, contact lens and low vision (visual impairment rehabilitation) clinics. These activities are dependent on professional knowledge at degree level, supported by relevant practical experience.

The post holder will participate in a programme for personal clinical development with a view to developing the knowledge and skills needed to complete the College of Optometrists Scheme for Registration.

Responsibility for administrative duties agreed by the optometry department including contributing to the planning and organisation of non-complex tasks within the department.

Theoretical and clinical teaching of optometric practice to ophthalmologists, medical students, ophthalmic nurses and other health care professionals.

Personal and professional responsibilities include compliance with local policies and protocols
