Job overview

This Band 7 Team leader physiotherapist role will provide leadership for the Queens Medical Centre Outpatient MSK Physiotherapy team based at Leengate. The post-holder will be responsible for leading and developing the service in collaboration with Clinical Specialist physiotherapists and fellow team leaders across other campuses. This role requires skills to inspire and develop the clinical and leadership performance of the team comprised of band 6’s, 5’s and students.

The complex cohort of patients treated at NUH, including spinal and complex chronic pain, requires a team leader with experience and a strong physiotherapeutic skill set in treating these conditions. Your approach will also value the measurement of treatment outcomes and you will be passionate about incorporating evidence based practice and performing audits. Efficient and effective Physiotherapy input with our patients provides clinical support to other specialties especially within the surgical division.  This has the potential to reduce the burden on lengthy surgical waiting lists and consultant appointment times.  This role requires a strong working alliance with our surgical and other MDT colleagues throughout the organisation.

You will regularly lead in-service trainings with your team and with wider teams within the physiotherapy department, the Trust and with community colleagues. .

Main duties of the job

This post requires a deep knowledge of the management of spinal conditions requiring physiotherapy, including scoliosis.

Core responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Leading the physiotherapy service

Providing a supportive and learning environment for team members under your direct management including undertaking annual appraisals and managing health and wellbeing

Contributing to the education and teaching of more junior physiotherapists, students, preceptees and therapy support workers.

Alongside the wider inpatient team, supporting the management and participation weekends and the bank holiday service.

Ensuring high quality, evidence based practice, service development and education underpin the service delivery.

The Physiotherapy service is part of the Therapies and Rehabilitation Services pathway, which is one of the pathways that together make up the Clinical Support Division at NUH.

We are a diverse pathway of AHPs and support staff, employing over 800 staff, working together to deliver the high quality care we aspire to. Our HCPC registered AHP professionals comprise of physiotherapists, dietitians, occupational therapists, orthotists, prosthetists and speech and language therapists.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc Physiotherapy or equivalent
  • HCPC registration
  • Evidence of appropriate post graduate study and professional development within specialist area
  • Evidence of maintaining professional competence through CPD.
Desirable criteria
  • First line management course e.g. BELS
  • Full membership of professional body
  • Member of specialist interest group

Skills and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post graduate experience, including a wide variety of rotations and experiences at Band 6 in relevant specialty
  • Experience of managing staff performance and sickness, and participation in recruitment of new staff to maximise workforce potential
  • Able to deliver training and educate individuals, team and wider MDT
  • Experience in evaluating evidence based practice, audit, service development and benchmarking
  • Awareness legislation relating to health and safety, litigation and Data protection
Desirable criteria
  • Band 7 experience in relevant specialty

Communication and relationship skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to build and maintain effective relationships with the multidisciplinary team, patients and carers
  • Able to communicate complex patient information effectively where there may be barriers to understanding e.g. language barriers, speech, cognitive problems
  • Demonstrate leadership ability
  • Able to present at to groups of up to 25 people
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of running courses.

Analytical and judgement skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to assess complex information, formulate a diagnosis and plan patient management using clinical reasoning skills and a range of treatment options
  • Able to solve problems within the team and make decisions where there are a range of options including clinical and strategic issues
  • Evaluate clinical and non-clinical interventions of self and your team

Planning and organisational skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to organise and prioritise workload of your self and your team, including daily tasks and longer term planning despite interruptions and changing priorities
  • Delegate and manage time effectively
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to plan and contribute to the service delivery up to a year ahead and with the multidisciplinary team in own clinical area using available resources.

Physical skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to handle and move complex patients using a way that promotes rehabilitation and is safe
  • Able to move and use medical devices
  • Basic keyboard skills including the inputting of data.

Other requirements

Essential criteria
  • Able to undertake out of hours duties including on-call
  • Able to travel cross campus and beyond the trust as needed
  • Maintain competence in respiratory care where appropriate
