Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our Immunology Team which is part of Clinical Pathology at QMC.   The hours of work will be 37.5 / week  (Monday-Friday 9.00am-5.00pm with half hour unpaid lunch break)

The department provides a wide range of analytical, diagnostic, interpretative and consultative service to Hospitals, Clinics and GP Practices.

You will be required to undertake basic laboratory tasks that are required for the smooth operation of this busy department. Duties include setting up instruments, checking and sorting specimens and laboratory reagents, receiving telephone enquiries, sorting mail, filing and retrieving samples and paperwork, general office duties such as photocopying, printing and scanning and general laboratory duties such as maintenance of equipment and cleaning of laboratory areas. The main purpose is to support the department in the delivery of a high quality diagnostic service.

Main duties of the job

 

·                Undertake laboratory-based work in the  pre analytical areas

·             Perform sample reception duties including the receipt, sample acceptance, barcode labelling and preparation of samples for analysis

·                Perform clerical tasks including data input of patient demographics and test request information

·                Perform general housekeeping duties including maintaining stock levels, general cleaning and waste disposal

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

 

    Perform laboratory pre-analytical techniques according to the department’s Standard Operating Procedures

      Follow laboratory processes for the referring of samples to external laboratories, using associated IT software where applicable

  Be aware of and follow the systems and processes of the departments Quality

Management System (QMS), interacting where appropriate via the QPulse system

   Be aware of and input appropriately to the departments ISO 15189:2022 compliance processes

7.         Demonstrate laboratory procedures to colleagues as part of the new staff induction training programme and assist in the coordination and training of MLA staff as appropriate

     Perform sample reception duties including sample acceptance, receiving, sorting, labelling, bar coding and racking of samples on arrival.

    File, archive and retrieve samples, dispatch samples to referral sites as appropriate.

    Perform clerical tasks including data input of patient demographics and request details and the filing, copying and retrieval of request forms.

Where applicable, accurately enter information onto the Pathology IT system following SOPs 

     Answer telephone enquiries and perform visitor reception duties.

     Perform general house-keeping duties including safe disposal of waste, general cleaning and tidying

   Maintain stocks of laboratory supplies including ensuring adequate supplies of general laboratory items.

    Comply with Trust policies and national legislation regarding confidentiality of patient information, the Data Protection Act 1998 and Health and Safety law.

   Work flexibly and undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade as required.

 

Person specification

Education

Essential criteria
  • Educated to GCSE or equivalent standard with passes at A-C or equivalent in English & Maths, or equivalent experience Basic science qualification, e.g. GCSE

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Can demonstrate numeric and literacy skills in the context of interacting with IT systems, data entry and using dashboards
Desirable criteria
  • Previous lab experience
