Haematology Day Case Deputy ward Manager

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and dedicated Registered Nurse to join our friendly and committed Clinical Haematology team as the Deputy ward Manager.  The Centre for Clinical Haematology is a nationally recognised centre of excellence for the treatment of haematological malignancies covering a large geographical area. The department is currently open from 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 8-4 on Saturday’s including bank holidays.

This role will include working alongside the current unit manager and team of deputies to lead and support the day case and outpatient team to provide an excellent high quality service for our haematology patients.

 

 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will act as Deputy to the unit Manager they will be required to:

Act as the deputy to the ward manager, completing managerial roles such as, return to work discussions, sickness monitoring, rota completion.
Be an effective leader and role model.
Will be expected to provide regular direct clinical care, administration of medications and chemotherapy.
Support the implementation of both clinical and non‑clinical governance.
Work flexibly as a member of the team to ensure standards are being maintained, evaluated, and where necessary improved.

Ensure high quality, evidence-based care is offered to patients and, in collaboration with the ward manager identify the common issues which affect the quality of care, devising clear action plans to address any shortcomings ensuring agreed action is undertaken.

In collaboration with the ward manager, ensure that the patient has a satisfactory experience by evaluating patient processes and redesigning the pathway of care.

Improve and maintain standards of essential (basic) nursing care by using tools such as clinical audits.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

During regular clinical sessions, act as a role model and teacher, working alongside other staff including visiting all patients in the ward in the absence of the Ward manager

Work with the Ward manager to identify hazards relating to clinical and non‑clinical risks and undertake identified risk assessments. Ensure that junior staff also see this as important by maintaining a culture which will support the delivery of both clinical and non‑clinical governance within the ward or department.

Along with the Ward manager support the ward or department team in completing appropriate risk assessments and develop action plans accordingly in order to provide a safe environment for the delivery of high quality patient care.

Ensure that all nursing documentation is regularly and appropriately reviewed and updated with changes implemented.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Current level one NMC registration
  • Teaching & Assessing Qualification
  • Demonstrate basic IT skills
  • Completion of all local competency packages
  • Continuing professional development/ reflective profile
  • IV competent
  • Venepuncture and cannulation
  • Blood product administration
  • Chemotherapy administration
Desirable criteria
  • Degree in health / nursing related Studies
  • Formal leadership and management training
  • Counselling and communication qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post-registration experience.
  • Supervision of non-registered staff, pre-registration and post basic students
  • Ability to manage a team and efficiently and effectively
  • Convey sensitive information in an empathetic manner to patients, relative/carers and staff.
  • Providing staff with feedback on their individual performance and use of the knowledge and skills framework
  • Demonstrate an involvement in link nurse, or project work
Desirable criteria
  • Recent or current experience within the specialty
  • Audit or research within the clinical area

Communication and relationship skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrate evidence of providing formal teaching sessions
  • Produce timely, accurate written/electronic records and documents
  • Recognition of own level of competence and limitations able to communicate these to appropriate staff
  • Can minimise interpersonal conflict and barriers to communication

  • Evidence of negotiation and influencing skills
  • Demonstration of team working and ability to work within a team
