Advanced Endoscopy training fellowship

NHS Medical & Dental: Senior Clinical Fellow

Job overview

Full-time to commence 3rd March 2025

This post is designed to provide specialist advanced endoscopy training and to support the activities of the endoscopy and gastroenterology department, within the Division of Surgery at NUH.

The posts will be based at both Queen’s Medical Centre and Nottingham City campuses and there may also be endoscopy outsourcing list opportunities. The post holders will work alongside a variety of Consultant Gastroenterologists and GI Surgeons and be responsible to the clinical leads in Endoscopy. This is a one-year post specifically intended for registrars approaching their final years of training or immediate post-CCT, and wishing to expand their speciality endoscopy experience. The post is suitable for both medical and surgical trainees, providing that they can independently scope.

There will be opportunity to undertake further focussed training in advanced endoscopy such as ERCP, EUS, enteroscopy, advanced upper and lower GI endoscopy including EMR training and exposure to ESD. These posts do not attract a National Training Number (NTN) and do not lead to CCT. As the candidate will be conducting service endoscopy sessions independently they will need to have achieved competency in diagnostic upper and lower GI endoscopy. Experience in capsule endoscopy reporting and common therapeutic endoscopic procedures (e.g. oesophageal dilatation, GI bleed management) is also desirable but not essential.

Main duties of the job

Minimum of 3 sub-speciality training lists in your area each week. The primary service clinical duties of these posts is to provide flexible cover for endoscopy lists or clinic and to perform inpatient endoscopic procedures as required. The post will therefore include an average of 5 flexible service sessions per week  There will be one session for audit/research and one session for patient or service related administration work.

The post-holder will also be committed to initiating, supervising and conducting a program of rolling audits (JAG/GRS audits) within the department as part of clinical governance requirements and to perform other tasks required to fulfil the criteria set by the global rating scale in endoscopy such as the development of guidelines. Examples would include audit of appropriateness of procedures, quality indicators, sedation practice, patient satisfaction etc. There are strong links to academic medicine within the department and the post holder will have the opportunity to participate in research in the endoscopy unit if desired. Candidates would be expected to have obtained the “Good Clinical Practice” (GCP) certification necessary to contribute in research before starting the post.

There will be the expectation of contributing to the consultant supported out-of-hours GI registrar/fellow on-call service. This will be primarily based at Queen’s Medical Centre campus although cover is required for City hospital campus.
