Applications are invited for the post of Advanced Intestinal failure/clinical nutrition Fellow at Nottingham University Hospitals’ NHS Trust. This post offers an exciting opportunity to join a cohesive and progressive gastroenterology and hepatology department with a strong clinical and academic national profile. We are looking for a dynamic individual with an interest in clinical nutrition who has completed their basic Gastroenterology training and is looking for additional training in this challenging and exciting area of GI practice. 

 

Main duties of the job

The role holder will contribute to both in and outpatient care of patients with problems related to intestinal failure. This will include IF ward rounds and clinics, outpatient clinics, MDT work and endoscopy sessions. These sessions will be under the supervision of members of our team of subspecialist IF physicians.

 

In addition there will be opportunities to learn more advanced endoscopic techniques related to intestinal failure and clinical nutrition, to carry out research and to help in the development of our growing IF service.

Clinical/Academic independence will be promoted and the fellow will be supported in any research initiatives they might have and will be encouraged to present these at national and international conferences and publish them in peer reviewed journals.

Nottingham University Hospitals’ NHS Trust is one of the largest tertiary NHS Trusts in the country and is a referral centre for the Mid Trent Cancer Network, which covers a population of over 2 million. Run jointly with the University of Nottingham, the GI and Liver theme of the NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre (Nottingham BRC; https://nottinghambrc.nihr.ac.uk/research/gastrointestinal-liver) conducts translational research in GI, clinical nutrition and liver specific areas and provides opportunities for candidates who wish to develop a research portfolio alongside their clinical interests. 

Within this exciting environment a team of 4 physicians and 4 surgeons with interests in intestinal failure supported by specialist nurses, dieticians, pharmacists and a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, deliver a regional complex nutrition/ intestinal failure service to a large geographic area in the East Midlands.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is a new post designed to support an important and growing service and to provide training which will equip the post holder to apply for a consultant job in the field. As such it will provide experience in all major aspects of intestinal failure work, will allow retention of more general gastroenterology skills and will also provide opportunities and time to work on service development which are hard to provide within a traditional SPR post.

Ward duties, clinics and endoscopy lists will be allocated to the post appropriate to the skills and needs of the successful applicant. In addition there may be an opportunity to participate in the middle grade gastroenterology OOH rota which. This rota is non-resident on call.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GMC registration with a license to practice
  • Equivalent to ST6 level specialist training in Gastro or above
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate Qualification
  • Eligible for entry on GMC Specialist Register

Experience

Essential criteria
  • At least provisional JAG sign off for diagnostic Upper GI and Lower GI diagnostic endoscopy
  • Completion of audit
  • Quality Improvement Project
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced endoscopy or IBD/Nutrition

Communication sklills

Essential criteria
  • Good communication skills, verbal and written
