Job overview

We are looking for a caring and enthusiastic individuals to join our breast imaging team at the Nottingham Breast Institute on the Mammography
Associate apprenticeship programme.

In this role you will perform mammographic examinations under the supervision of a state registered practitioner, within the screening and symptomatic breast services.   In addition a range of support duties will be undertaken including assisting radiologists, clinicians and radiographers during diagnostic breast investigations.  This role will allow you to deliver clinical excellence, build effective working relationships within a multi-disciplinary team and provide positive patient experiences and would ideally be suitable for staff already working within a clinical role.

The successful candidates will be paid under Annex 21 of the Agenda for Change Terms and Conditions for the duration of their training.

Mammography posts have a gendered protected character, due to the nature of the work. This is an occupational requirement, as a result the post is exempt under section 9; part 1 of the Equality Act 2010 and therefore only female applicants should apply.

Main duties of the job

Following initial classroom based learning you will develop within your apprenticeship training programme by learning the technique of
mammography imaging as a valued member of the Trust’s breast imaging team. During your apprenticeship you will learn:

• how to operate specialised mammography equipment safely
• how to produce high quality mammography images
• patient dignity and care
• how to deal calmly with all types of people
• how to promote and maintain professional practice

You will work alongside our experienced team of advanced practitioners, radiographers, assistant practitioners and radiographic assistants
participating in both screening and symptomatic mammography. On-going support will be provided by our experienced clinical training team and you will receive a salary enabling you to earn as you learn.

To be eligible for the apprenticeship training you will need:
• to hold level 2 English and Maths, or equivalent
• be legally allowed to work in the UK
• have lived in the UK for the last 3 years.

We provide all outpatient services for those requiring diagnosis or treatment in the Nottingham area and we deliver the Nottinghamshire breast screening programme with a screening population of over 117,000 women. Our breast screening service operates over 4 sites, the Nottingham Breast Institute, Ropewalk House and at our 2 mobile units. These mobile units rotate round 6 locations within Nottinghamshire.  You would be expected to work at all locations on a rota basis, and therefore it is essential that you hold a full UK driving license and have access to a car for work purposes.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Apprenticeship training 

You should:

  • Be enthusiastic and punctual and attend all relevant lessons and courses.
  • Keep accurate records and prepare for assessments as planned.
  • Behave responsibly and in line with standards laid down by the training provider and the Trust.
  • Work for the Trust to the best of your ability and in accordance with the Trust’s policies and procedures.
  • Ensure all work produced and submitted is your own work.
  • Work towards all targets set by your tutor/assessor and make every effort to achieve them within the time set.
  • Keep in regular contact with your assessor and provide evidence of knowledge in a timely fashion.
  • Play an active part in the progress review process and communicate regularly with the work place mentor.
  • Fully commit to achieve all parts of the framework.

Using digital mammography equipment, and under the supervision of a  state registered radiographer learn how to take standard 2-D mammograms.  This will involve:

  • Identifying and checking the client’s personal details and obtaining and recording all information relevant to the procedure
  • Ensuring compliance with the procedure is recognised and appropriate action taken if consent is withdrawn at any time
  • Positioning the client for the examination
  • Irradiating the woman in order to produce an image
  • Ensuring images and examination details are appropriately recorded and stored
  • Using excellent communication skills

Mammography Provision

  • To take mammograms under the supervision of a state registered radiographer on both symptomatic and asymptomatic women at static and mobile sites. This will involve:
  • Identifying and checking the client’s personal details and obtaining and recording all information relevant to the procedure
  • Ensuring compliance with the procedure is recognised and appropriate action taken if consent is withdrawn at any time
  • Positioning the client for the examination
  • Irradiating the woman in order to produce an image
  • To ensure images and examination details are appropriately recorded and stored
  • Use digital mammography equipment
  • To consistently carry out mammography examinations to a standard which meets the NHSBSP Quality Assurance Guidelines for Mammography
  • Adhere to Breast Service Clinical Protocols and Guidelines and Local Rules of Practice including IR(ME)R
  • To participate in peer review activities to measure, monitor and maintain high mammography standards
  • Manage own workload in order to maintain service and clinic workflow
  • To work within the Mammography Associate Scope of Practice and own competencies and will recognise and seek assistance when required
  • To be a fully participating member of the multi-disciplinary breast team including attending multi-disciplinary meetings
