Senior Legal Manager

Band 8a

Job overview

At Nottingham University Hospitals, we’re growing our Legal Services Department. Across the Trust we are investing in our people, and putting our development plans in action. So, it’s an incredibly exciting time to join us.

As a senior solicitor within the team, you’ll be at the forefront of everything legal that we do and have a positive impact across the Trust and when engaging with key stakeholders. It’s a hugely rewarding role where we’ll give you everything you need to develop your career.

Your work will make a real difference to the life and wellbeing of Trust staff members who are involved in legal processes.  A dynamic and experienced lawyer you will be looking to take your next step in your legal career. Perhaps you are an associate who would like to get some supervisory experience, or someone who is looking to move from private practice to an in-house role, or you may already have experience of working in-house.

In return, you’ll be given plenty of opportunities to grow and develop. And you’ll have access to lots of other benefits, including a generous NHS Pension and holiday allowance and an exciting range of exclusive staff wellbeing activities.

Main duties of the job

This is a fast-paced and dynamic role, no two days are the same. You’ll have a background of being a good litigator, with inquest experience or general advocacy experience. You will understand the importance of hitting deadlines, of following process, of running a case load properly but also be empathetic, kind and supportive. You’ll be able to multi-task, organise your time and move seamlessly from one task to another. As a real team player who thrives in a busy environment, you’ll get the best out of yourself – and us.

Day-to-day, you’ll run a mixed case load of complex inquests, claims and general health law advice matters. You will provide timely advice on legal matters to staff across the Trust, in all Divisions and to the Board. Work will cover a range of things including any issues that arise on inquest and claims matters and any general advice queries which often touch upon consent, safeguarding, behavioural issues, and medical treatment decisions. You will be responsible for the supervision of more junior team members.

You will be involved in making positive changes to Trust processes and guidance and sharing learning and themes from claims and inquests in order to support the Trust’s drive for quality and to improve patient safety.
