Consultant Clinical Psychologist Lead within Emergency Department- Band 8c, 0.6 wte  permanent contract.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Clinical Psychologist to work within ED at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, based at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham.  The ED provision is a relatively newly funded service, which is seeking an 8c Consultant Clinical Psychologist to further scope and develop the service.  This post will therefore provide the opportunity to be involved in designing & shaping a new service, one of only a few nationally in a dynamic & highly supportive environment, where Clinical Psychology is already very highly valued.

The post holder will have a regular physical presence in the ED department at QMC in order to be physically available to support patients & their families. Also, to be able to support ED staff members on a face-to-face basis or at times, via telephone or video consultation. On occasions, the post-holder may need to provide some holiday cross-cover within the areas of Critical Care or Major Trauma at QMC.

The service will be delivered in collaboration and consultation with senior Psychology staff & ED staff at QMC.  Clinical supervision will be provided by an existing experienced & highly supportive Consultant Clinical Psychologist who works within Critical Care & Major Trauma at QMC.

Training and Qualifications

  • Postgraduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology
  • Eligibility for Chartered Clinical Psychologist status and registered as a Clinical Psychologist with the Health Care Professions Council

  • Post-doctoral training/study in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice and supervision.
  • Additional study/qualifications in illness or health psychology.
  • Attendance on a regular basis at highly specialist CPD/training events
  • Specialist knowledge, experience and/or training relating to communicating with patients who are extremely unwell and / or their families.

Experience

  • Substantial post qualification experience working in a clinical medical / health psychology setting.
  • Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients’ psychological care and treatment, both as a professionally qualified care coordinator and also within the context of a multidisciplinary care plan.
  • Experience of teaching, training and/or professional and clinical supervision to unqualified clinical psychologists and clinical psychologists in training.
  • Experience of supervising and managing research and audit projects.
  • Extensive post-qualification clinical experience of working with patients with general medical conditions and chronic illnesses.
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity across a range of care settings including outpatient and inpatient. Including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse

  • Demonstrable experience of working with ED patients or with patients from services such as critical care and major trauma
  • Experience of representing the profession in local policy.
  • Experience of leadership and management
  • Experience of managing and developing specialist services
  • Experience of specialist staff support & wellbeing services.
  • Experience of working with patients with traumatic, severe and complex physical injuries
  • Experience of professional management of qualified or pre-qualified clinical psychologists
  • Experience of multi-professional management of teams or services within the designated specialty

Communication and Relationship Skills

  • A high level ability to communicate effectively at both a written and oral level complex, highly technical and clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and a wide range of lay and professional persons within and outside the NHS.
  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment intervention and management, frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
  • Ability to contain and work with organisational stress and ability to ‘hold’ the stress of others.
  • Ability to identify provide and promote appropriate means of support to carers and staff exposed to highly distressing situations and severely challenging behaviours.

  • The ability to work effectively with clients from a diverse range of cultural/ethnic backgrounds, and to understand and respect the impact of difference and diversity upon clients’ lives and difficulties.

Analytical and Judgement skills

  • Evidence of highest level of analytical and judgemental skills.
  • A doctoral level of research knowledge. The ability to lead on both clinical and non-clinical research, applying a doctoral level of knowledge and skills in research designs, methods and analyses (including complex multivariate statistics) as practised in the field of clinical psychology.
  • Ability to analyse highly complex psychological data in order to develop individual psychological formulations
  • Ability to identify, and employ, as appropriate, clinical governance mechanisms for the support and maintenance of clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour.
  • Good judgement about when to act to ensure safety
  • Ability to continue to think clearly in situations of high emotion and stress
