Physiotherapy team leader - Haematology/Oncology

Band 7

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic physiotherapist to join the Cancer Services team at NUH as a Band 7 physiotherapist. For this permanent post we are looking for a physiotherapist with interest in cancer care and specialised clinical experience within haematology and oncology, or relevant transferable skills.

 

You will have a significant experience as a registered Physiotherapist within oncology or haematology, plus core areas of Respiratory, HCOP, Neurology and Orthopaedics. You will have highly-developed team work skills, alongside a creative, flexible, and proactive approach delivering quality patient care.

 

Haematology/oncology physiotherapy is nested within a wider team including renal and respiratory services. The postholder will co-lead this wider team; some clinical cross cover will be required. Alongside a direct patient-facing caseload, team leadership will include supporting the team to offer high quality patient care by monitoring performance, strategic roles in service development and workforce planning, supporting supervision, attendance management, development conversations and ensuring we have resources and equipment required for our roles. You will have demonstrable leadership skills and service development experience, excellent communication, time management skills and an ability to build networks and influence.

NUH is a large acute teaching hospital with specialist centres for Breast Care and HPCT: this post will allow you to work with a great variety of patients and alongside experienced clinicians. You will be expected to work collaboratively across the wide-ranging MDT. 

 

Core responsibilities include but are not limited to:

 

  • Leading the physiotherapy service in a growing service to provide a responsive service to acutely unwell patients when required
  • Providing a supportive and learning environment for team members under your direct management including undertaking annual appraisals and managing health and wellbeing
  • Contributing to the education and teaching of students, preceptees and therapy support workers, including training new staff for weekend and respiratory duties when required
  • Participating in out of hours respiratory service at City Campus of NUH which incorporates respiratory medicine, renal, haematology/oncology, cystic fibrosis unit, cardiothoracic surgery, general surgery and critical care. This includes overnight on-call, late shift and weekend services.
  • Ensuring high quality, evidence based practice, service development and education underpin the service delivery.
  • Ensuring the NUH values and behaviours are embedded in everyday practice

Our HCPC registered AHP professionals comprise of physiotherapists, dietitians, occupational therapists, orthotists, prosthetists and speech and language therapists. We have a Chief AHP to lead us on our strategic direction, and many of the pathway leadership team have pathway AHP backgrounds to support our staff. There are also Practice Development Therapists to support career development for all.

  • Permanent 0.7 WTE (26.25 hours) Band 7 post
  • Working  Fridays is essential; remaining working pattern can be negotiated. 
  • Additional duties will include participation in on call and weekend working as well as a late shifts (1-9PM). Weekends are rostered with expected frequency of 1:4, an on-call average 1 per month and late shifts approximately 1-2 per month but all are dependent on service need and staffing levels

  • HCPC registration
  • Evidence of appropriate post graduate study and professional development within specialist area

Skills and Experience

  • Significant post graduate experience, including a wide variety of rotations and experiences at Band 6 in relevant specialty
  • Experience of managing staff performance and sickness, and participation in recruitment of new staff to maximise workforce potential
  • Able to deliver training and educate individuals, team and wider MDT
  • Experience in evaluating evidence based practice, audit, service development and benchmarking

Communication and relationship skills

  • Excellent verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to build and maintain effective relationships with the multidisciplinary team, patients and carers
  • Able to communicate complex patient information effectively where there may be barriers to understanding e.g. language barriers, speech, cognitive problems

  • Able to present at to groups of up to 25 people

Analytical and judgement skills

  • Able to assess complex information, formulate a diagnosis and plan patient management using clinical reasoning skills and a range of treatment options
