Job overview

The post holder is responsible for the prompt placement of all CAS specialty elective, specialty transfer and emergency patients.  The post holder will have an awareness of overall demand for CAS beds from the following routes: elective, emergency, specialty transfers (internal and external) and critical care stepdowns; overall CAS immediate and predicted bed capacity; any issues impacting on the prompt placement of any CAS patient and patient flow through the Division.

The post holder will be based at: City Campus

Main duties of the job

 An opportunity has arisen for a full time band 4 bed manager to join our established Cancer and Associated Specialties  Flow team.

Our service runs  7 days a week and so the post holder must be able to work long days, no nights required.

The post holder will be responsible for maximising the effective and efficient utilisation of beds across the CAS division. We are looking for an individual who enjoys working at a fast pace, can multi-task, adapt quickly to changing situations and remain calm and professional in demanding situations.

It is essential that the post holder has knowledge in the use of nerve centre and other trust IT systems and desirable that candidates possess a solid understanding of patient flow and discharge processes within the trust. 

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are also essential and the role is a very physical involving continuous walking across the surgical wards.

Essential criteria
  • Attends regular organised study sessions to maintain skills, expand protocols and remain updated
  • Ability to learn specific theoretical knowledge of surgery, thoracic and oncology/ haematology medicine and procedure to maximise the appropriate usage of beds within the Directorate
  • Good general standard of education
  • Excellent knowledge of Trusts IT systems
  • Telephone/receptionist/clerical experience
  • NVQ 3 or equivalent qualification

  • NVQ 4 or equivalent qualification
  • Team building training
