The East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EMAS) provides Emergency, Urgent and Non-Emergency pre-hospital care and transport across six counties (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire & Rutland and Northamptonshire).


 

Job overview

Based within the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), the post holder is primarily responsible for devising, preparing and delivering training interventions and assessments to meet organisation needs and initiatives. This relates to training for both new and existing Non-Clinical EOC staff and external bodies when required.

 

 

Main duties of the job

Identify training needs through monitoring performance and assisting staff to reach and maintain the Trusts Performance standards and contribute to delivering quality patient care.

To ensure training is completed as necessary, the post holder will be required to work across both EOC sites as required.

Provide a support role in the EOC when required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key Result Areas:

 Communication and Relationship Skills:

  • Provides written and verbal feedback to EOC personnel regarding their progress and any remedial training requirements.
  • Ensure effective two-way communication with EOC personnel across both sites when training and mentoring.
  • Communicate effectively with education team colleagues to ensure continuity and best practice.
  • Provide the L&D Manager with reports relating to training targets.
  • Undertake duties as delegated and supervised by the L&D Manager
  • Produce written reports for internal and external meetings/publications.
  • All EOC communication is sensitive and covered by the Calidicott Report and Data Protection Act.
  • Provides complex information when training EMAS systems; processes and Trust Performance standards to EOC staff.

 Knowledge, Training and Experience:

  • Participate in training events and development opportunities identified by the Trust to develop own skills and personal effectiveness
  • GSCE or equivalent in English and Maths – minimum Grade C or above
  • Achieve and maintain competence, according to the requirements in NHS Pathways. Hold a current certificate in CPR. Achieve the required competence level personally.
  • NHS Pathways Accredited (Accredited Training Module, Coaching & Mentoring & Auditing, CM1 & CM2 qualified)
  • Recognised teaching qualification e.g L3 AET (Award in Education and Training).
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience

 Analytical and Judgement Skills:

  • Utilise skills for assessing training requirements for staff on remedial training.
  • Support the investigation of complaints including Serious Untoward Incidents, Formal Complaints and PALS where complex EOC procedures and processes have been used and a range of not straightforward situations may have occurred.

·   Required  to analyse and make judgements on the adherance to the EOC procedures.

 Planning and Organisational Skills:

  • Organise their own work on a day to day basis
  • In a disaster recovery and/or service continuity situation you will be required to undertake any tasked duties to support the control function within EMAS
  • Undertake project planning making adjustments if targets aren’t being met (ongoing).
  • Allocate staff to training courses to meet organisational requirements across both EOC sites,
  • Required to plan the EOC training program for new and existing non-clinical staff across both EOC sites including Local Induction, CAD, Policies and Procedures, delivery of workshops and remedial training.

 Physical Skills:

·     Driving a car to meetings, conferences and training events and visiting Lincoln/Nottingham EOC & Beechdale training facilitie

  • Standard RSA 1 keyboard skills and MS office packages when preparing  reports and training packages.

 Patient and Client:

  • Provide NHS Pathways advice to patients in line with procedures under emergency situations e.g CPR advice, haemorrhage etc.
  • As qualified NHS Pathways call taker provide call taking support

 Policy and Service Development

  • Follow National, Trust and EOC procedures to ensure performance targets are being achieved
  • Implements EOC related policies and proposes changes in working practices

 Financial and Physical Resources:

  • Safe use of specialised  training equipment
  • Responsible for the safe use of training equipment.

Human Resources:

  • Demonstrate EOC systems to observers.
  • Deliver local induction to new staff.
  • Responsible for the mentoring of new staff.
  • Responsible for the teaching of a range of specialist training programs relating to the EOC.
  • Support the Recruitment & Selection process within the EOC

 Information Resources

· Prepare reports on training programmes, outcomes and performance indicators utilising excel spreadsheets, ICT packages and CAD for EOC Learning & Development Manager. The databases will need to be maintained by the post holder. 

 Research and Development

  • Occasional trial new CAD and NHS Pathways systems.

 Freedom to Act:

  • Guided by standard operating procedures within the EOC.
  • Adheres to NHS Pathways procedures
  • Job is managed rather than supervised
  • Physical Effort:

·    Required to stand in front of class for lengthy periods (8 hour days) when teaching/training.  This can be for periods of up to 4 weeks at a time.

·         Over 50% of the time spent sitting in office at VDU.

·    Moving training equipment (boxes of training equipment) (approx 15+ kilos)

 Mental Effort

·     Frequent requirement  to  concentrate when delivering training or writing reports or training packages.

·     Needs to be flexible as circumstances may change at short notice to support the needs of the EOC i.e computer failure

 Emotional effort

·     Required to pick up 999 calls as part of NHS Pathways qualification and therefore has patient contact in an highly emotional situation.

·   Any nominated tasks when assisting in Disaster recovery or Major Incident support

·      Occasional exposure to traumatic and to highly distressing emotional incidents.

 Working conditions

·         Use of VDU equipment more of less continously .

·         Driving between EOC sites

·         Based in the EOC

Essential & Desirable

Essential criteria
  • Teaching qualification L3 AET (Award in Education and Training
  • Educated to Degree Level or have equivalent experience.
  • NHS Pathways Qualified Accredited Training Module (ATM) Coaching & Mentoring, Auditing and CM1 & CM2
  • 2 years EOC experience
  • Experience of delivering and devising learning programmes
  • Experience of supporting staff development
Desirable criteria
  • Project management experience
  • CMI- Recruitment & Selection Level 3
