We are pleased to advertise for a Senior Assistant Psychologist to join Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust's (NHFT) Urgent Care and Assessment Service (UCAT). This post will be supervised by, and support the work of a qualified Clinical Psychologist, working within UCAT.  The successful candidate will support the provision of psychological assessments and interventions with clients under the care of UCAT, contribute to enhancing psychological understanding within the MDT and may assist with audit and service evaluation projects.

Regular clinical supervision will be provided, as are many opportunities to learn about a wide range of presentations and services due to the integrated nature of the Psychology Services within NHFT. Depending on the demands of the above role, clinical experience can be offered in a variety of areas, including individual and group work. It is essential that applicants have a recognised undergraduate degree in Psychology and have the Graduate Basis for Registration with the British Psychological Society. Experience of working within adult mental health services would be beneficial. Experience of delivering individual psychological interventions and research skills would be advantageous.

Supporting the qualified Clinical Psychologist to bring a psychological perspective to the UCAT case load

Contributing to the process of assessment, including risk assessment

Undertaking short-term psychological interventions with UCAT patients under the supervision of the qualified Psychologist

Supporting the wider UCAT team with resources, training and general teamwork

NHFT is an integrated primary care and mental health Trust, providing physical, mental health and specialty services in both hospital settings and out in the community. Because we put the person at the centre of all we do, we focus on delivering care that is as easy to access as possible. This means many of our services can be provided at home, work or in schools. We also provide health services to various prisons and detention centres in Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.

About You:

  • An ability to work sensitively and compassionately with people experiencing acute mental health difficulties and/or mild learning disabilities
  • An ability to interact effectively with staff from all disciplines, demonstrating empathy and an open communication style with all team members. 
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team as well as independently, reliably and consistently with work agreed and managed at regular intervals. 
  •  Ability to accept and use supervision appropriately and effectively.
  • Able to work in a flexible way and respond to changing service needs 
  • Able to work in a fast paced and challenging environment, and tolerate uncertainty within the role. 
  • Able to work with service users and families experiencing acute distress and maintain high levels of professionalism in the face of highly emotive situations. 
  • Strong capacity for self reflection. 
  • A positive approach to working with difference and diversity 
  • A genuine interest and enthusiasm for working within a crisis setting and with those experiencing acute distress.

Essential

  • An upper second class honours degree or higher in psychology. Entitlement to graduate membership of the British Psychological Society 
  • Working in a healthcare setting 
  • Experience of working with people with mental health problems and/or other disabilities as an assistant psychologist 
  • Experience of using psychological assessments, formulations, risk assessments and care planning 

 

Desirable

  • Further post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice and/or research design and analysis. 
  • Experience of working in acute mental health services. 
  • Experience of individual and/or group-based psychological interventions including CBT and DBT.
  • Some understanding of transdiagnostic approaches
