Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust is looking to recruit a Security Officer to work in our busy Security Services Department.

The post holder will be part of a team that provides 24 hour security cover, 365 days of the year. Providing a high profile visible service throughout the Trust and Site, working to provide effective protection to the patient, visitors, and staff. The service protects NGH property against theft, and vandalism, and secures all buildings within the site.

The post holder will deal with difficult and challenging patients and members of the public. Conflict resolution training along with role specific security training will be provided.

The post holder will be a highly visible point of contact for all visitors to the site and will need to maintain an up to date, in depth knowledge of the site and its workings alongside always demonstrating peerless customer service skills.

Post holders will also be required to assist in manning the Security reception desk, acting as primary point of contact for the department alongside dealing with access control issues out of hours. At all times post holders will be expected to not only support but to become exemplars of the Trust values alongside maintaining a highly presentable image by wearing all appropriate uniform and PPE.

The post holder will be required to deal with a diverse range of violent and confrontational situations. The Officer will need to be able to communicate at the highest level in order to diffuse and manage conflict situations where possible and know when and how to escalate their response as appropriate. Additionally, the post holder will need to be able to work within the Trusts clinical activities, balancing the needs of ongoing care with the need to ensure safety.

The post holder will be dealing with a wide variety of potential conflict incidents many of which will occur in very emotionally charged, traumatic scenarios. Throughout this the post older will need to remain professional and impartial at all times.

The post holder will be expected to engage in appropriate physical intervention whilst adhering to all local, national and legal requirements.

Post holders will be required to complete a wide range of training in order to fulfil their role effectively which will include but is not limited to Restrictive Physical Intervention training and Conflict Resolution training alongside all Trust mandatory training. The post holder will further require a working knowledge of all relevant legislation and their application. This will include numerous aspects of criminal law, the Mental Health Act and the Mental Capacity Act among others as appropriate.

Post holders will be required to keep effective, accurate records in several different formats both written and computerised. The post holder will be expected to make effective use of several different computerised systems including the Trusts incident reporting tools, CCTV systems, access control systems and fire safety systems.

The post holder will be using and helping to maintain the Trust’s CCTV network. This will include viewing live images, reviewing footage and preparing footage for the Police. This must all be completed in line with local guidelines, the ICO code of practice, the Data Protection Act and General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). This includes the use of approved body worn camera solutions.

As a key member of the Trust’s fire response team the post holder will need an in-depth knowledge of the Trust’s fire safety and fire activation procedures. The post hold holder will be expected to maintain appropriate cordons, investigate the possible seat of a fire alongside any probable cause alongside giving advice to senior staff on the appropriate actions to take. On occasion it may be necessary for the post holder to lead the fire response and under certain circumstances will be required to reset the fire detection and suppression systems.

The Security department play a key role in traffic management and car parking across site and the post holder will be required to support this in a number of different ways. This will include being a first point of contact in the car parks, maintaining machinery, emptying machines, ensuring traffic flow and on occasion assisting with road closures.

The post holder will at times be required to transport cash and other valuables across site in line wit all relevant Trust policies. Additionally in support of other duties Security staff may have to take payments and deposits.

The post holder will be expected to undertake numerous sitewide pro-active patrols during which they need to be aware of any number of factors relating to not only security issues but fire prevention, information security and data protection, site safety and more. The post holder will need to be able to work independently without direct supervision and how to resolve, escalate and report issues they encounter.

The post holder will need to maintain an adequate level of fitness to complete what can be a very physically demanding role which includes not only long hours on their feet but high levels of explosive physical exertion in restraint scenarios.

The post holder will be expected to work in a number of adverse conditions across the Trust including adverse weather, heat and cold. Appropriate PPE as supplied will need to be worn where appropriate.

The post holder will need to be able to work under their own initiative and to be able to manage their time. The post holder will also need to take the lead in certain emergency situations whereby they will have to direct staff from other departments to complete appropriate tasks a safely as possible.
