SAFEGUARDING PAEDIATRIC LIAISON AND CHILDREN’S ADVISOR – BAND 6 - SUBJECT TO BANDING

Due to staff reduction in hours  of the current post holder, there is now an exciting opportunity to join the integrated safeguarding team at Northampton General Hospital.

The person must have a genuine commitment to safeguarding and who is experienced or wants to develop within this field. The role encompasses promoting a positive culture of safeguarding to ensure it is part of everyday practice.

 

Main duties of the job

The Safeguarding Paediatric Liaison Nurse Advisor will contribute to the delivery of safeguarding services supporting the Named Nurse and Named Doctor for Safeguarding Children as detailed in Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018, Children’s Acts 1989 and 2004, Northamptonshire Safeguarding Children’s Partnership (NSCP) procedures and other national and local legislation and policy.

The post holder will support the Named Nurse to implement good practice of national recommendations and guidance from lessons learned from Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews (CSPR’s), provide safeguarding children advice and support to all wards and departments, facilitate ad hoc and prearranged supervision and deliver safeguarding children’s training to all practitioners in line with Intercollegiate Document (2019).

The post holder will ensure that there are effective two-way communication and sharing of information between hospitals and community services which enables children and their families to receive appropriate care and support. This includes liaison internally and externally with partnership agencies such as hospitals, GP’s, Health Visitors, School Nurses, CAMHS, LAC Specialist Nurse, Children’s Social Services, Police and other statutory and voluntary stakeholders.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Provide safeguarding children advice to staff that is evidence based and underpinned by current legislative and national guidance.

 

To challenge unsafe practice and escalate concerns to the Named Nurse and Named Doctor for Safeguarding Children.

 

To work together with Named Nurse and the community and hospital teams to ensure that young people, children and babies that have safeguarding concerns are identified and protected.

 

To develop effective communication links and partnership working with multi-agency practitioners which enhance the direct care of children in need, in need of child protection or early intervention.

 

To attend the local Vulnerable Adolescent Panel (VAP) to support/reduce the risk and vulnerabilities in children and young people who come into NGH care, who may be subject to various forms of exploitation.

 

To scrutinise Emergency Department (ED) attendance lists daily to ensure any safeguarding concerns are actioned in a timely manner.

 

To process all Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) referral forms ensuring that safeguarding databases are updated daily.

 

To process all Paediatric Liaison Forms (PLF’s) that have been completed, adding actions for partner agencies to follow up/complete within primary care that are necessary to safeguard the child that may have not been thought of by the clinician.

 

Participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of liaison processes in conjunction with community, primary care and hospital services.

Daily visits to the paediatric wards and ED to liaise and support staff with reference to any safeguarding concerns that may arise.

Provide support to staff involved in child protection process through attending child protection conferences, strategy meetings and other interagency professional meetings as the need arises and /or briefing practitioners in relation to these meetings.

To work with the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children to implement appropriate quality assurance systems including audit.

Review and complete MARAC documentation for meetings, and completion of MARAC risk assessment tool where appropriate, supporting Trust staff in this process.

Action ‘information requests’ that are received from the local PREVENT coordinator to contribute towards PREVENT Channel Panel.

Liaise with the Independent Domestic Abuse Advisor (IDVA) referring patients to Domestic Violence Support Services.

In collaboration with the Named Nurse, support the development of robust safeguarding practices and the Safeguarding Children’s Service leading on projects as identified.

To act as an advisor and resource for matters relating to safeguarding children within the organisation, giving advice to clinicians, relatives and carers.

To evaluate clinical information from referral information, prioritising in accordance with national and local policies and guidance to assess all PLF and interagency referrals and ensure that they are disseminated to other professionals involved, assist in the follow up of outcomes from interagency referrals when required if PLF not available.

To identify complex cases that require a higher level of intervention and escalate to the Named Nurse and other members of the general safeguarding team as appropriate and other agencies teams in devising a plan of action.

To work with the adult safeguarding team in meeting trust responsibilities to young adults receiving care and treatment through knowledge of the Mental Health Act / Mental Capacity Act including Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards /Liberty Protection Safeguards

To communicate effectively when dealing with sensitive, distressing information and demonstrate empathy when dealing with patients, carers and relatives.

Communicate information relating to a child’s death with the relevant professionals including the Child Death Review Panel, completing child death notifications.

Contribute to sensitive investigations as part of early management reviews.

To provide support and advice to hospital and community staff through safeguarding clinical supervision process working in partnership with the Named Nurse

Education, Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered nurse/children’s nurse/midwife.
  • First degree level or equivalent experience.
  • Evidence of post-qualification study.
  • Trained to a minimum of safeguarding children’s level 3.
Desirable criteria
  • Specialist community public health nursing (Health Visiting – School Nursing).
  • Teaching and/or mentoring qualification.
