The post holder will participate in the delivery of high standards of care to patients and their families. In particular take responsibility for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of evidenced-based nursing care to a group of patients They will participate in the management of the ward when required, ensuring smooth and efficient running in the absence of the Ward Manager or Senior Staff Nurse. They will take responsibility for their own self-development helping to provide a suitable learning environment and high standards of clinical practice. To recognise own limitations and seek advice and support from senior staff.
Main duties of the job
As a band 5 nurse, you will provide a family centred approach to care, have good communication skills with a willingness to learn and work as part of a large team.
You will be caring for children of all ages 0-18yrs, across all medical specialities including CAMHS and eating disorders. In addition the wards include a High Dependency Unit, bespoke oncology service and a Paediatric Assessment Unit.
Your personal and professional development of skills and knowledge will be supported by the Practice Development Facilitator, Clinical Educator and our well established and experienced team across the wards' specialities. Opportunities are considered for further training within the appropriate specialty areas.
Students across several training pathways are regularly on placement with the team therefore a qualification in supervising and assessing students is required. Training will be provided if necessary.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Direct care of our patients from 0-18 years
• Actively contribute to setting and maintaining high standards of quality
nursing care.
• Actively participate in the education, development and supervision of other staff members.
• Act as a clinical and professional role model, assessing and supporting
students and learners on placement within the clinical area.
• Work collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of
patients and their families.
• To maintain accountability for assessing, planning, implementing and
evaluating programmes of care.
• To co-ordinate the patients’ discharge arrangements in accordance with NGH Discharge Policy.
• To educate patients and their carers as required where a need has been identified.
• To complete patient documentation correctly.
• To maintain a safe ward environment.
• To assist in establishing and monitoring protocols/care pathways.
• To participate in the promotion and maintenance of effective communication written and verbal.
• To ensure patient confidentiality.
• To supervise junior staff in the delivery of care.
• Responsible for the safe supply, storage, administration, checking and
disposal of medications including controlled drugs.
• To undertake any expanded roles deemed necessary for the role following
the Trust policy ‘Expansion of Professional Practice for Registered
Healthcare Practitioners’.
Policy/service development implementation
• Undertake the Trust Corporate and Directorate specific Induction and
competency Programmes.
• To contribute to annual appraisal and be responsible for own personal
performance/development plan to achieve KSF outline for role.
• Able to identify learning needs in self, negotiating a Personal Development Plan recognising own limitations.
• Contribute to the education and training of others, gaining an understanding
of clinical supervision.
• Actively promote evidence-based practice within the clinical area and
contribute to audit initiatives.
• Adhere to all Trust Policies and Health & Safety, as applicable.
Financial & physical resources
• To develop and maintain an awareness of budgeting, exercising care and
economy in the ordering and use of equipment, supported by written
documentation where applicable.
• Responsible for the effective and efficient use of Clinical, physical and

• To attend Trust/local orientation programmes and mandatory training
sessions.
• To be responsible for developing and sustaining own knowledge, clinical skills
and professional awareness.
Research & development
• To practice clinical competencies in line with relevant Trust initiatives e.g.
Essence of Care.
• To maintain and promote an awareness of evidence-based practice and

participate in its Implementation.
• To contribute to research and development programmes within the
ward/department.
Freedom to act
• Use health related information only for the purposes of what it is intended for
and in accordance with the Data Protection act.
• Ensure confidentiality is maintained at all times and information relating to
patient / users and personnel is used only in connection with authorised
duties.

• The postholder may be required to carry out other relevant duties as required.

Statutory and miscellaneous
• Take responsibility to ensure that Professional Registration is up to date at all times and
does not lapse or expire and to inform line management immediately with any concerns or
if registration lapses or expires. (all registered staff)
• This post involves treatment to children and/or vulnerable adults as defined by the
Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). It will therefore be necessary to apply for and be
in receipt of a satisfactory enhanced DBS check of the post holder. (this statement
relates to patient facing clinical role)
• If you have not had a satisfactory DBS check within the last three years you may be
required to apply for an updated DBS check during your employment.
• The Trust requires require all new starters to subscribe to the DBS update service
where it is a requirement of the role.
• Be responsible for maintaining own vaccinations/Hepatitis B immunity.
