Job overview
This is a 6 month contract to cover secondment. The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, planning and delivery of evidence based nursing care in the community setting to a caseload of children/young people aged 0-18 years.
The children on our caseload have a variety of chronic and acute conditions requiring nursing intervention and support such as enteral feeding, long term ventilation, CVAD care, and complex symptom management including palliative and end of life care.
Main duties of the job
You will be working collaboratively with the child/young person, their parents/carers and the multi professional team around the family (Including interagency working).
Use of enhanced communication skills to promote good working relationships are required in order to facilitate the best outcomes possible for the child/young person.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To ensure professional skilled nursing care is provided to patients within the community/home setting and adapted to meet individual needs.
Working within the multidisciplinary team and across partner agencies to develop good relationships with the families, children and young people to maintain high standards of care at all times.
To provide holistic care to the child and family ensuring that timely referrals are made to other agencies as necessary.
To provide clinical expertise by setting standards in the assessment of patient’s care needs using agreed protocols within the scope of the service.
To provide clinical expertise in providing education and support for the children and families in the community setting.

You will deputise for the Lead Nurse in her absence, regularly provide management in the day to day running of the service and provide supervision to junior members of the team and mentorship to students in training.
Our core service hours are 08.00-18.00 Monday – Friday, working contracted hours as a shift pattern of early shifts – 08.00-16.00 and late shifts 10.00-18.00 across the working week. The post is for 22.5 hrs worked over 3 days.
The service supports children and their families during end-of-life care and flexibility of work practice to be able to support these times is necessary- working flexibly across a 7 day service, including unsocial hours and on call on occasion when required.
Note: Duties do not include provision of respite/short break care in the home setting
Person specification
Education and Training
Essential criteria
- RN Child/RSCN or equivalent
- Recognised training in Teaching/Assessing
- Evidence of continued professional development
Desirable criteria
- Degree level Nursing qualification
- Training in Children’s Palliative and End of Life Care
- Advanced Communication Skills training or equivalent
- Leadership training
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- ‘Post qualification paediatric nursing experience, preferably within Community Children’s Nursing or other relevant setting
- Knowledge of child safeguarding procedures
- Experience in children’s palliative care
- Experience in interfacing with multi-disciplinary team
- Has knowledge of current issues for the speciality
- Computer literate
Desirable criteria
- Experience of delivering training to parents/carers
- Awareness of SEND strategy
- Experience in risk assessment and lone working
- Experience of End of Life care for children
Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria
- Confidence in varied clinical skills to include enteral feeding, administration of intravenous therapies, administration of injections, wound care, CVAD competencies
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to deliver care in a variety of sometimes physically demanding settings
- Means and ability to carry out visits across the West Northants area in a timely manner
Desirable criteria
- Understanding of the application of leadership skills
- Experience in developing and supporting varied programmes of teaching and assessing
