We are looking for a Chief Operating Officer (COO) to join us at the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire.  If you are a dynamic, collaborative, innovative and experienced COO we hope this role will be of interest to you. 

The UHN Group includes Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust with a combined turnover of circa £900M and 11,000 employees.  Working together KGH and NGH serve the healthcare needs of a population of 2 million people.  As a university teaching hospital, teaching and research are important, with a focus on developing strong wide ranging academic partnerships leading to improved patient outcomes and exciting opportunities for colleagues.

The UHN COO is a new role required now we have aligned to a single executive team at UHN.  The role reports to the UHN Chief Executive Officer, is a voting Executive Director of both NGH and KGH Boards and is a pivotal role in the leadership of University Hospitals of Northamptonshire NHS Group (UHN).

The COO is responsible for daily and ongoing operational delivery according to the Trusts’ operational plans and strategic intent. They will lead the delivery of high-quality clinical services and co-ordinate effective day to day performance management across all UHN Divisions. 

Working as part of the Integrated Leadership Team (ILT), the COO will provide expert advice to colleagues on all operational issues, ensuring the achievement of NHS constitutional standards, whilst ensuring the safe provision of high-quality, patient focused services.  Accountable for the delivery of key national standards, the COO will deliver high quality services, waiting time standards for A&E, elective services, outpatients and cancer services.  Our new COO will play a pivotal role in the integration of NGH and KGH, for the benefits of patients, colleagues and the future sustainability of the two hospitals as well as working closely with colleagues at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) to deliver the benefits of working together at scale.

  • Successful track record at Director/ Senior Management level, including exposure at Board Level in a large complex organisation.
  • An understanding of key NHS Service Performance Standards.
  • Experience of developing and implementing transformation programmes with a track record of successful delivery against national and local targets.
  • Demonstrable experience of setting and delivering a long-term vision, whilst responding to short-term challenges and opportunities.
  • Experience of successfully delivering cost and productivity improvement programmes.
  • Experience of managing large complex budgets across multiple areas/ specialisms
  • Experience of supporting integration and collaboration across separate legal entities.
  • Sound knowledge of corporate governance and risk management.
  • Knowledge of national NHS policy and strategy.
  • Ability to assess, analyse, synthesise and act upon complex performance data and financial information.

  • Able to deal positively and promptly with colleagues’ concerns and personal problems, challenge colleagues on any inappropriate behaviours or poor performance and investigate and deal with complaints as required.
