Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our friendly breast screening unit.

You will need to be able to work effectively within our team, supporting patients through breast imaging and breast interventional procedures.

The role will be predominantly working in the breast ultrasound rooms, chaperoning patients, and may involve long periods of standing.

This is a full time post, with core hours being worked between 8.45am and 5.00pm, although flexibility around clinic timings will be required.

Competency in cannulation would be desirable and previous experience of working in a healthcare setting would be highly advantageous.

Main duties of the job

Based at the Breast Screening Unit within the Treatment Centre at Kettering General Hospital the successful candidate will work with the rest of the breast radiology team to deliver a compassionate patient focused service.

The post holder will work within the breast multi-disciplinary team, to support in the delivery of the NHS Breast Screening Programme and also the symptomatic breast imaging service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Welcoming patients to the department

As required, to assist the patients in dressing and undressing, use of toilet facilities, chaperoning patients during the imaging examination and maintaining the privacy and dignity of patients throughout their visit to the department.

To treat all patients in a professional manner with particular regard to the concerns and anxieties of patients attending for symptomatic, screening and assessment procedures.

To assist the clinician or radiographer and the patient including preparing the equipment for examinations, supporting the patient during procedures, and looking after the patient following their imaging or procedure. 

Observing the patient and escalating to qualified staff of any adverse changes in the patient’s condition.

Preparation of sterile trolleys.

Applying sterile dressings and giving patients post-biopsy advice.

Escorting patients to and from the waiting and observation areas.

To support administrative duties including clinic preparation and sorting of breast screening clinics for reporting.

To participate in audit and infection control measures, to ensure a safe and clean environment for patients, including appropriate care and cleaning of equipment.

To escalate any faulty equipment or hazards.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ or equivalent in Healthcare

Experience

  • Experience of working within a healthcare setting

  • Experience of dealing with anxious or distressed patients
  • Knowledge of aseptic technique
