Job overview

 An exciting opportunity has arisen for Optometrists keen to  enhance their knowledge and extend their skills by joining our team of Consultant Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Imaging and Nursing staff working in the Retinal Treatment Clinics based at the purpose-built  Community Stadium in York.  

Please note: This post is for 7.5 hours to be worked on a Thursday

We are looking to recruit highly motivated Optometrists with an interest in AMD, DMO and RVO who would be keen to undertake an extended role in these specialized clinics 

The role entails the assessment of patients attending the RTC service to determine if treatment is required,

The successful applicants will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team alongside Consultant Ophthalmologists, using advanced clinical techniques and skills to undertake assessment of new patients and follow up patients attending the RTC and Macular Clinic, prior to treatment.

The successful candidates will need to hold a BSc in Optometry and be registered with the General Optical Council.

Practical knowledge of AMD, DMO and RVO, it's assessment and treatment are required but relevant training will be provided to fulfill the needs of the post. Prior knowledge and experience of undertaking and interpreting OCT's is desirable but not essential.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide highly specialised advice contributing to the diagnosis, management, education and discharge of patients within the RTC & Macular Service.
  • To undertake a specialist extended clinical optometry role, in the diagnosis and management of patients with ARMD, DMO and RVO
  • As an autonomous practitioner to be legally and professionally responsible and accountable for the management of patients in your care and to keep accurate and contemporaneous records.
  • To maintain a high standard or clinical record keeping, in keeping with departmental, legal and national standards.
  • To be fully conversant and compliant with Data Protection Act, Access to Health Records Act and Trust policies in relation to confidential data.
  • To liaise with and give detailed medical information to the Consultant Ophthalmologists & all members of the Optometric team.
  • To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team consisting of Ophthalmologists, Orthoptists, Nurses, clerks etc.
  • To undertake any other duties/roles to fulfil the post and meet the needs of the service as agreed with your Line Manager.
  • To work closely with professional colleagues in developing professional clinical performance and audit these.
  • To contribute to teaching and training.
  • To participate in continuing education and training (CET) as required by the G.O.C

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc Ophthalmic Optics or Optometry
  • Registration with the General Optical Council
Desirable criteria
  • Post-graduate optometric qualifications in Medical Retina

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Good theoretical knowledge in a range of clinical areas in particular Macular Degeneration, DMO & RVO
  • Ability to competently undertake specialist advanced clinical extended roles.
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced knowledge of Macular Degeneration, DMO & RVO and Ocular therapeutics
  • Experience of undertaking and interpreting OCT results

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Clinical skills required to undertake the job include: • Tonometry • Slit lamp biomicroscopy
Desirable criteria
  • OCT and its interpretation
