The post holder will work closely with and support the maxillofacial and plastic surgery teams within the Clinical Directorate. The SCP will provide this support to maxillofacial and plastic surgery consultants and will be based on the wards, in the operating theatre, and in the outpatient clinics.

 

In partnership with the Consultant mentor and Matron, the jobholder is responsible for implementing evidence based, patient focused care as well as providing specialist knowledge, assistance, and support for nursing and junior medical staff in the field of maxillofacial and plastic surgery. 

 

The jobholder will be enrolled onto the Surgical Care Practitioner course at Edge Hill University following appointment. The course will be funded by the Directorate and will involve a 3-year distance-learning course (including 8 weeks of residential and 2,200 clinical hours) resulting in a Masters Degree. During this time the jobholder will be assigned a Consultant mentor and will be trained whilst doing the job.

Following completion of the Degree, the jobholder will progress to the Band 7 pay scale, you also will be required to remain with the trust for a minimum of 2 years to be eligible for the funded course. If you fail to complete the course or leave the Trust within 2 years of completion, you will need to repay some of the cost of the course (in line with a Learning Contract).

  • Clinics, seeing specific pre-operative patients and listing them for surgical procedures following additional training appropriate to local guidelines and requirements
  • Pre-operative assessment processes including clinical examination and enhanced recovery education as directed by the surgical team
  • Arrangement of appropriate pre and post-operative investigations as part of the multidisciplinary team to enhance patients safety, to facilitate patient-centred care and contribute to the smooth running of operating lists
  • The consent process following guidelines from the GMC and local trust or healthcare provider. SCP’s should have an understanding of the principles of the Mental Capacity Act regarding consent
  • Liaison with medical, theatre, ward and clerical staff on relevant issues including theatre lists to support coherent service provision
  • Surgical procedures in the operating theatre as part of the multidisciplinary team for the surgical specialty under the supervision and direction of the operating surgeon
  • Operations, acting as first or second assistant as directed by the supervising surgeon
  • Daily ward rounds, making assessment and formulating plans for patients post operative care
  • Postoperative care, including wound assessment, initial treatment and identification of surgical problems and complications
  • The identification of the acute deterioration of patients and have knowledge of national early warning scores

  • Recognised teaching and assessing qualification
  • Willing to undertake further training as necessary to undertake role

Experience and knowledge

  • At least 18 months as a Band 5 or equivalent in a surgical field
