Specialty Doctor in General Surgery

Medical and Dental

Job overview

Applicants are now welcome to apply for an exciting opportunity at Scarborough Hospital.

The successful candidate will join the General Surgery team consisting of 20 consultants who perform a full range of upper and lower GI surgery including laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery, TAMIS, TaTMe, complex abdominal wall reconstruction surgery, pelvic floor surgery, pelvic endometriosis surgery, advanced proctology, advanced colonoscopy, IBD surgery, ano-rectal physiology, laparoscopic bariatric surgery, laparoscopic anti reflux, laparoscopic hernia surgery, laparoscopic biliary surgery, minimally invasive pancreatic surgery and upper GI physiology. Elective day surgery services are provided on both our main sites. Currently more major surgery is principally carried out in York, with plans to expand activity in Scarborough in the near future.

Main duties of the job

This post would suit senior trainees wishing to gain further open experience or more junior trainees wishing to improve their CV prior to application for a specialist training post.

The post holder would be required to participate in a on-call rota on a 1:8 basis.

The post is not a recognised training post, but would be ideal for those wishing to gain further experience in the specialty as the training, supervision and clinical experience will be similar to that of the training grade doctors and tailored to the potholders’ previous level of experience.

Candidates must have full GMC Registration, while a familiarity with issues of service organisation and development would be particularly advantageous.

Working for our organisation

We became a Foundation Trust on 1 April 2007, which led to significant changes to the overall governance of the organisation and increased the links to the local community through the appointment of governors and members.

We provide acute and community services for approximately 800,000 people living in and around York and Scarborough, providing a range of specialist services over a wider catchment area across North Yorkshire, East Yorkshire and Rydale.

In April 2011 the Trust took over the management of some community based services in Selby, York, Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale. This includes some community nursing and specialist services as well as Archways in York, St Monica’s in Easingwold, The New Selby War Memorial Hospital, Whitby Hospital and Malton Hospital.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

In addition, unselected emergency general surgery on call admissions are cared for on both sites. A separate vascular surgery on call rota is provided, based on the York site.

You will also be given the opportunity to train in lower GI or upper GI endoscopy subject to discussion/appraisal.

This post would suit senior trainees wishing to gain further experience or more junior trainees wishing to improve their CV prior to application for a specialist training post.

The post holder would be required to participate in a on-call rota on a 1:8 basis.

Job plans will be reviewed at least annually, following an appraisal meeting. The job plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out a doctor’s typical working pattern, duties and responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. It will cover all aspects of a doctor’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities and external commitments.
