Job overview
The Maintenance Worker will contribute to the delivery of a full schedule of planned and reactive works, to ensure that such works are undertaken in a timely manner and that targets with regards to compliance testing on numerous engineering systems and disciplines are met.
The post holder will be required to undertake a range of duties, including: minor repairs, installation of fixtures and fittings, basic maintenance of engineering systems (water, ventilation), clearing of drains, gullies, grease traps and guttering, assisting with routine fire alarm testing, water safety testing, recording and reporting of temperatures and results, replacement of lamps and hand-held nurse call units, recording of utility meter readings, assisting skilled and semi-skilled trade staff in the undertaking of their duties, assembly of equipment for wards and departments
The post holder will be fully aware of their Health and Safety responsibilities, and ensure that all operational activities of the department are carried out in compliance with appropriate safety regulations and legislation.
The Maintenance Worker must be able to work and act on their own initiative, and possess the ability to communicate effectively with all other members of HIF and HDFT.
Main duties of the job

- Learn new techniques and undertake training as required by the needs of the service, in order to provide a safe and efficient service.
- Liaise with colleagues, customers and service users to organise maintenance activities and access to areas of work.
- Communicate effectively, with wards, departments, and service users in relation to maintenance activities and Estates issues.
- Take all necessary precautions to prevent danger, avoid injury to self or others, and damage to equipment.
- To follow and observe all systems of safe working practise: asbestos register, RAMS, H&S systems.
Working for our organisation
Harrogate Integrated Facilities (HIF) Estates Department’s primary objective is to manage and maintain all engineering services, including all aspects of the built environment at Harrogate & District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT), in order to provide a safe and comfortable environment for patients and staff; and ensuring compliance with all statutory standards. The department manages all planned and reactive engineering tasks associated with the various systems, such as; low voltage electricity, hot and cold water, steam, ventilation, medical gas, fire, alarms and BMS, together with the maintenance and upkeep of the buildings themselves, including structure, roofs, roadways and internal/external finishes.
The department also provides expertise in relation to the delivery of Capital Project schemes as required by the needs of infrastructure development within HDFT.
HIF provide waste and energy management that supports HDFT’s sustainability agenda.
HIF also develop operational standards, high level technical professional advice; support to various stakeholders, clients, directors, clinicians, colleagues, consultants and contractors and ensure that adequate control mechanisms are in place in terms of cost, time and quality of all services.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Carry out weekly fire alarm testing, including recording of all results and reporting any defects to the system in a timely manner.
- Routine maintenance of ventilation equipment, including: replacement of filters, cleaning of internal ductwork and ventilation chambers, cleaning of louvres and ventilation grilles in wards and departments.
- Recording and reporting of water temperatures, flushing of dead legs and little used outlets and cleaning of water fixtures and fittings (shower heads).
- Carry out repairs to plumbing systems, not integral to the supply of water, such as replacement of fixtures (WC seats).
- Assembly of flat-pack style equipment and furniture.
- Minor repairs to equipment, fixtures and furniture.
- Recording of meter readings and engineering data.
- Assisting and accompanying contractors in the undertaking of their duties.
- To be responsible for tools, plant and materials which are used within the scope of the Estates Department.
- To keep line management informed of matters affecting the delivery of the service and to make recommendations on improvement.
Person specification
Education and Training
Essential criteria
- • Level I or II qualification in an engineering discipline OR equivalent experience
- • Asbestos Awareness and Legionella Awareness qualifications OR willingness to undertake such training within 12 months of appointment.
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- • Possess technical knowledge and sufficient experience to avoid danger when undertaking engineering tasks.
- • Experience of carrying out testing to services, inc. water and ventilation.
- • Must display a good knowledge of health and safety legislation and appreciation of potential hazards which may occur during the carrying out of maintenance work.
