We welcome applications from individuals wishing to become an Apprentice and gain experience in the NHS.  You will develop new skills and knowledge whilst working with an established team gaining valuable work experience and a recognised apprenticeship qualification.

You will be enrolled with a local education provider and will be required to complete your Level 3 Diploma in Business Administration Apprenticeship Standard qualification within the duration of the placement.

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Gastroenterology Team for a highly skilled Administrator to work with the Upper Gi Cancer Team. The successful candidate will need to be confident with IT, including Word and Excel.  You will need to able to work on your own initiative and prioritise your daily work. 

This role is full time, 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday

Main duties of the job

To work closely with clinicians, specialist nurses, secretaries and all members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) within the body site and with associated departments, to ensure that patients on a cancer pathway are actively managed through the patient pathway. 

To co-ordinate the patient journey from referral, through diagnostics, treatment planning and treatment, highlighting any potential delays in the pathway and ensuring accurate data collection to support the process. 

To highlight relevant patients to the clinical team for discussion at the Multi Disciplinary Meeting (MDT) and to ensure that the MDT coordinator receives all relevant information for the patients to be discussed.

To work closely with members of the Cancer team and with other PPC’s across the Trust in developing policies and procedures that ensure seamless management of cancer patients in all specialties.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Actively track patients urgently referred to the Trust from General Practitioners (GP) who are suspected at referral of having Cancer.  Ensure that these patients are listed on the Trust Cancer IT system.
  • Ensure that appropriate requests for investigations are initiated following the clinician’s instructions and that appointments are given.
  • To adhere to the Trust’s General Principles and Guidelines on Patient Access in relation to the management of waiting lists.
  • Ensure that any newly diagnosed Cancer patients are identified and added to the Trust Cancer IT system. Ensure that the patient is known to the clinical team and that appropriate action is taken to manage the patient on the agreed pathway.
  • Highlight any potential delays or breaches of the patient pathway according to the Trust escalation policy.
  •  Where it is not possible to manage patients through the pathway by the target dates, to ensure completion of breach reports.  To be pro-active in suggesting changes to the pathway and facilitating change.
