Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Cellular Pathology Department for a Band 3, Healthcare Support Worker. 

The vacancy is a permanent 37.5 hour post. 

We are a busy routine Histology and Diagnostic Cytology department processing 36,000 specimens per year.  The HCSW role is primarily to facilitate the throughput of histology and Diagnostic Cytology specimens through the laboratory and on to the reporting consultants.  This includes assisting with dissection and section cutting. Training will be provided. 

We are looking for energetic, enthusiastic individuals to play an active role in the departments continuing development. 

 

Main duties of the job

Receive, sort and distribute samples to the appropriate laboratory or section

Data input into departmental computer systems

Prepares and processes clinical specimens for biological testing being conversant with the procedures for handling unfixed samples

Assisting with Biomedical Scientist and Pathologist dissection sessions including allocation of work

Prepare reagents and participate in the analytical process under the supervision of a State Registered BMS

Perform supervised microtomy of tissue blocks in order to produce tissue sections for microscopic analysis

Prepare a range of diagnostic cytology samples

Perform such functions, including sample handling and clerical duties, as are necessary to ensure the efficient running of the Department

Report filing, tissue block and microscope slide filing and retrieval

Collating slides and reports for Multidisciplinary Team Meetings

Sending away of blocks and slides

Responding to telephone enquiries

Perform all duties under supervision of qualified staff, as directed by Senior Staff

Take responsibility for stock control of consumables/deliveries where appropriate

To undertake safe disposal of laboratory waste such as pathology samples including human tissue and body fluids

Relevant QC checks and booking out of work to Pathologists
