An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join our small SLT older adult mental health inpatient team.

The post is based across four hospital sites across beautiful South East Wales, which provides specialist Speech and Language Therapy service within four older adult mental health assessment wards. You will be working with older adults presenting with both communication and/or eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties due to dementia or functional mental health difficulties. We have a strong focus on working with families, ward staff and care partners in achieving the most beneficial outcomes for our patients. We work closely within the multi-disciplinary team including Psychiatry, Medicine, Nursing, and other AHPs.

This role would provide exciting opportunities to contribute to the development of our SLT services for this patient population including enhancing and delivering our targeted offer for both communication and eating, drinking and swallowing provision.

You will be part of an innovative and motivated team where high focus is placed on ongoing continued professional development and creative thinking in our effort to ensure high quality care is at the heart of our service.

Main duties of the job

  • Providing specialist clinical advice around maximising and supporting our patients’ speech, language and communication strengths in order to facilitate positive and meaningful participation within ward life and beyond. 
  • To contribute to providing dementia-friendly mealtime experiences ensuring eating, drinking and swallowing needs are efficiently identified and appropriately managed through supportive strategies and environments.
  • In order to achieve this, you will:
    • Offer specialist speech, language and communication assessments where appropriate
    • Support others including families to implement communication care plans to enable our patients to access ward activities including recovery programmes and interventions, engage in social opportunities, and exercise autonomy through decision -making.
    • Contribute to the design and delivery of projects working towards improving communication environments through embedding good communication strategies and standards.
    • Contributing to design and delivery of group-based communication interventions to increase opportunities for socialising and relationship building during admission.
    • Be actively involved in holistic MDT discussions and care planning relating to differential diagnosis, treatment planning as well as issues of safeguarding, capacity and decision making, and complex behavioural issues where communication needs are unmet....

Essential criteria
  • Speech and Language Therapy Degree
  • Registered with HCPC

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of performing and analysing highly complex assessments
  • Significant post graduate experience in speciality services.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with people with learning disabilities

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent and sensitive interpersonal skills including observation, listening, counselling and empathy skills with people with disordered communication skills.
  • Able to analyse complex assessment information for complex cases and make specialist clinical decisions

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of national policies in Health and Social Care
