An exciting secondment opportunity has arisen within Aneurin Bevan University Health Board for an Assistant Transfusion Practitioner (Band 6) to promote and improve safe and appropriate transfusion practice through training and education in line with legislation and national/local guidance.

This 12 month secondment post is full time but part time (30hrs) would be considered. 


The post holder will be work across all Health board sites, providing education and training to those staff involved in the transfusion process.

You will be expected to work under the direction of the Transfusion Practitioners as part of the Hospital Transfusion Team which include the Clinical Transfusion Lead, Transfusion Laboratory Managers, and other Transfusion Specialists. The post holder will manage their own workload and will be expected to attend meetings to represent ABUHB within and outside of the Health Board for example at the Welsh Blood Service.

The Transfusion team within ABUHB and across Wales are a close knit team who work well together collaboratively promoting safe transfusion and best transfusion practice.

This post offers an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated Registered Nurse or other health professional (e.g. ODP, BMS) with knowledge of Blood Transfusion. 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the delivering of training packages for all aspects of the transfusion process, including the remote issue systems, and co-ordination and subsequent delivery of transfusion related education and competency assessment for all staff involved in the transfusion process. They will be involved in the monitoring of traceability and transfusion related incidents, including the mandatory reporting to MHRA, and to undertake clinical audits, both local and national.

You will require excellent communication skills to promote excellence in transfusion practice to all staff groups and for all clinical areas.

This post is fixed term/secondment for 12 months to meet the needs of the service.   If you are interested in applying for the secondment position, you must obtain permission from your current line manager prior to applying for this post.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will work as a key member of the Hospital Transfusion Team (HTT). The HTT has overall day to day responsibility for transfusion management and safety within ABUHB and will implement objectives set by the Hospital Transfusion Committee (HTC).

The post holder will act as a link and ensure clear lines of communication and collaboration between the Transfusion Laboratory and ABUHB/non ABUHB clinical staff with regard to safe blood transfusion practice.

Communicate sensitively with clinical staff following transfusion related incidents.

Communicate with external bodies including Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and Serious Hazards of Transfusion (SHOT) when investigating and reporting serious adverse reactions (SARs), serious adverse events (SAEs) and near miss events to resolution whilst assisting with the implementation of corrective and preventative action and monitoring its efficacy.

Qualifications & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Health Professional with Degree level qualification
  • Appropriate professional registration (NMC/HCPC)
  • Evidence of on-going CPD
  • Evidence of post registration education to diploma level
Desirable criteria
  • PGCE / teaching qualification
  • Mentorship qualification or equivalent
  • Post-registration transfusion qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post-registration experience
  • Experience of transfusion in a clinical or laboratory setting
  • A working knowledge of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams etc.)
  • Understanding of clinical audit
  • Knowledge of national clinical guidelines and standards relating to blood transfusion
  • Experience communicating with a range of staff on complex clinical & technical issues
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of teaching / assessing / mentoring
  • Previous audit experience
  • Awareness of MHRA and UKAS Standards & requirements
  • Awareness of Blood Safety & Quality Regulations (2005)
