Job overview

The Royal College of Psychiatrists recognise pharmacists as essential to perinatal mental health. We are delighted to be able to recruit an enthusiastic pharmacist to join our perinatal team.  

This role is ideal to build clinical experience, management, and leadership skills. Activities include providing specialist advice to patients, members of the perinatal team and other professionals e.g., GPs. You would participate in training, education, specialist medicines information and guideline development.  There are opportunities for audit and quality improvement. Prescribing is expected in this role.

This job is split between perinatal MH and MH inpatient wards. It will suit someone wanting to join a welcoming team with a desire to further improve their clinical skills. The successful candidate is expected to influence prescribing, support safe and effective use of medicines, and continue to integrate pharmacy into the wider MDT.

The  base will be Nevill Hall, but most time will be spent on various sites across the health board area. Exact working locations will be determined on appointment.

Applicants must demonstrate a broad-based clinical knowledge, ideally experience of MH pharmacy, and excellent communication skills.  The ability to work within a MDT, being enthusiastic and innovative are essential.  We will provide the necessary support and access to training opportunities to ensure your development.

Main duties of the job

  • To be responsible for leading and delivering a specialist clinical pharmacy service to patients under the perinatal MH service and wider mental health service, medical and nursing staff and other healthcare professionals in accordance with legal and professional requirements and standards.
  • To provide ward-based medicines management service to specialist clinical area
  • To act as a Directorate Pharmacist, providing expert specialist pharmaceutical advice and reports on medicines expenditure within a specified directorate.
  • To provide occasional Professional/Clinical cover for the dispensary services.
  • To provide training and education that meets the statutory, professional and regulatory requirements of foundation pharmacists, post-foundation pharmacists, other pharmacists, and technicians.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

  • Experience of post registration in Hospital Pharmacy Environment
  • Recent experience of providing ward/clinical pharmacy services in a hospital or primary care setting
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of providing ward/clinical pharmacy service in a hospital setting
  • Experience of providing a clinical pharmacy service to mental health settings
  • Experience of workplace tutoring/mentoring

Qualifications and/or knowledge

  • One year pre-registration competency based training
  • Postgraduate clinical specialist knowledge acquired through diploma level training i.e. Diploma in clinical pharmacy/ MSC or equivalent experience
  • Member of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPC) or eligible for membership.

  • Accredited tutor for Clinical Pharmacy Diploma
  • Independent prescriber
  • Working towards RPS faculty membership
  • Post-graduate qualification or training in mental health therapeutics
