The salary scale above has been agreed as part of the NHS Agenda for Change pay award for 2024/2025 and will be implemented in November 2024 backdated to 1st April 2024 where applicable.
Job overview
This is a key role within the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) where, as part of a team, you will deliver all aspects of decontamination of equipment. These will involved the cleaning, disinfection, packing and sterilizing of items for use in the treatment of patients by Theatres, Wards and Departments.
To undertake up to a 24 month training programme under Annex 21 to complete a formal Competency Development/Training Plan, and be signed off as competent by completing the plan and associated e-learning and gaining appropriate work experience.
This will enable the post holder to then undertake all duties and responsibilities as identified within this CSSD Technician job description.
During the training period, the post holder will be paid at 70% of the top pay step of Band 3 (for Months 1 – 12), and 75% of the top pay step of Band 3 (for Months 13-24) in accordance with Annex 21 of the Agenda for Change Terms and Conditions. If successful candidate currently works in NHS Wales, there will be no financial detriment as per Annex 21 Guidance (July 2023).
Upon successful attainment of the qualification and work experience, even if sooner than the 24 month allocated timeframe, the post holder will automatically move to the bottom pay step of Band 3 as they will meet the full outline of this role, and therefore be expected to undertake all duties within this Job Description.
Main duties of the job
- Work as part of a team, undertaking duties as directed and be available to work across all UHB sites as requested.
- Communicate with all users of the service, this will include theatre staff and staff within satellite units.
- Act as a link between Theatres and the CSSD Unit and ensuring high levels of communication.
- Understand, interpret and respond to requests from service users where there are barriers to understanding, negotiating requests in order for demands to be met.
- Possess computer literacy skills, for scanning and typing data as part of the tracking system within the department.
- Be required to carry out all aspects of the decontamination process without direct supervision.
- Carries out daily pre-production and post-production checks, recording completed checks on checklists.
- When priority requests are made by service users, will log and communicate any related information, including clear and concise explanations for the reasons for any possible delays or estimated time spans, internally or externally to the dept.
- Plan own time in accordance with the duties allocated by the departmental supervisors, including re-prioritizing workloads in accordance with the production and equipment usage at the time of the request.
- Ensure that all working practices are carried out according to department and UHB policies and procedures.
- Be required to make the appropriate decision with regard to the processing if there is a problem, or there is an item of instrumentation missing.

- Carry out assigned tasks involving the disassembly, cleaning, disinfection, packing and sterilizing of items for use in the treatment of patients by Theatres, Wards and Departments.
- Provide information at short notice to service users in relation to the processing times for instrumentation in accordance with the production situation within the department, suggesting the use of alternative sets and instrumentation where appropriate.
- Will have individual accountability for the processing, packing and sterilizing of items to ensure traceability.
- Comply with and promote all policies and procedures pertaining to this post, and promote the highest standard of professional practice and safe working procedures.
- Collect used medical instruments and trays from various departments for processing e.g. Theatres, obstetrics, dental, A&E, Wards etc.
- Disassemble, check and clean medical instruments and trays individually.
- Manual dexterity to process Theatre/Ward/Department medical trays and instruments in accordance with sterilization procedures.
- Operate machinery associated with cleaning, packaging and sterilizing medical trays and instruments.
- Inspect, assemble and pack medical trays and instruments, including large quantities of intricate and complex items under magnification.
- Distribute medical instrument trays and instruments, obstetric delivery trays, dental equipment, A&E instruments, etc. to relevant Wards and Departments.
- Enter data relating to items received, processed and returned to the user, into the computer tracking system to meet the requirements of the Quality Management System (QMS).
