Job overview
As part of an organisational change we are offering an opportunity for our existing phlebotomy staff with the necessary experience to express an interest to apply for the new Band 3 posts in the Phlebotomy service. Candidates will require to have at least 6 months experienced as a phlebotomist in their current role.
Main duties of the job
JOB PURPOSE
To complete venepuncture procedure for persons aged 12+ with no upper age limit in a clinic; 16+ in domiciliary setting.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
PRINCIAPL RESPONSIBILITIES
1.
To be responsible day to day for own workload; receive referrals and allocate case-load list according to priority.
2.
To be accountable for own actions and decisions at all times, demonstrating ability to seek advice and guidance from Line Manager as required.
3.
To maintain own Continuing Professional Development.
4.
To actively participate and contribute to team working in response to service developments and the business plan.
5.
Work within the community (e.g., within a patients’ own home) as a lone practitioner with telephone support. Seek advice and support from a more senior colleague for matters outside sphere of responsibility, knowledge, or skills.
6.
Work independently in a busy clinic environment ensuring that patients receive blood tests on time and manage patient flow.
7.
Obtain informed consent from the patient to treatment and the sharing of information, documenting in accordance with Trust procedures.
8.
Support those service users referred on a specific pathway whereby bloods are taken under duress in best interest pathway.
9.
Use IT systems to document outcome of appointments and keep clinical notes up to date.
10.
Escalate and seek advice from seniors if specific risks are identified e.g. unsafe environmental conditions.
11.
To work within health and safety guidelines and policies and adhere to relevant Trust procedures.
12.
To work positively with colleagues to maintain effective working relationships.
13.
Comply with Trust Clinical Governance and Health and Safety requirements within agreed policies and procedures.
14.
Follow and contribute to new policies and local guidance and contribute comments on proposed/required changes to meet changing service needs.
15.
Plan and prioritise own workload and cover others workload during absence including the planning of the most efficient route to and between destinations in the community.
16.
Plan daily community visits to maximise capacity, considering referral criteria/visit time bands and unscheduled care, recording on the relevant information data systems.
17.
Collect statistical information about daily contacts where required and input onto database for service.
18.
Actively participate in audit, research and development activity when required.
19.
Undertake daily routine administrative tasks to ensure effective service delivery e.g., photocopying within current Trust policies and procedures.
20.
Defective equipment is reported and made safe without delay in accordance with Trust procedures.
21.
Work towards completion of competency framework within agreed timescales.
22.
Participate in clinical supervision as per individual requirement.

Be competent in the procedures required for bleeding High Risk, Immunocompromised and barrier nursed patients.

Restock the Phlebotomy rooms when necessary.

To work across merseycare phlebotomy footprint when required.

Contribute to the delivery of a quality service to patients within agreed timescales.

Communicate effectively with patients to ensure correct identification, cooperation, and clarification of complications.

Ensure samples are labelled correctly according to protocols.

Be competent in dealing safely with fainting patients and those who become unwell.

Answer telephone enquiries in a helpful manner.

Qualification
Essential criteria
- NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social care or relevant experience working as a phlebotomist
- Computer literate
- Educated to GCSE standard or equivalent including English or equivalent work-based experience
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Has customer care experience or experience of being a carer/HCA
- Experience of working in a care environment
- Must either be Hepatitis B immune or be willing to undergo an immunisation course
- Can demonstrate a basic understanding of the needs of the patient and the role of the Phlebotomist
- Willingness to develop clinical skills and competency relevant to the role e.g. phlebotomy skills
- An understanding of equality within the workforce and how it can impact on this post
- Can demonstrate motivation, reliability and commitment to team working and the development of others
- Flexible, reliable and demonstrates an ability to value the opinions of others
- Understanding of personal health and safety responsibilities
