Wirral University Teaching Hospital is proud and excited to be the Cheshire and South Mersey Elective hub for elective recovery.  Our development on our Clatterbridge Hospital site over the next 10 months will see commissioning  of 4 operating theatres, a 35 bedded phased recovery unit and associated inpatient beds. Clatterbridge Hospital currently has 6 operating theatres and a minor procedure room within the Perioperative Medicine Directorate.  Operating theatres are managed with the Directorate of Perioperative Medicine.  The directorate has over 440 staff  and supports services including:

  • Pre-operative Assessment
  • Surgical Elective Admissions Lounge (SEAL) at the Arrowe Park Hospital site
  • Acute & Chronic Pain services
  • Operating Theatres
  • 3 Phase recovery
  • Clatterbridge Hospital (CGH) Day Ward
  • Department of Anaesthesia
  • Sterile Services Department
  • Surgical Inpatient Ward (M2) CGH Site.

Development of the South Mersey Elective Hub is underway and we are looking at the first wave of activity commencing soon.

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting development on the site and to support delivery,   we are looking for motivated, innovative, and patient focused staff to join our amazing team.   We have a dynamic plan to support regional activity in specialisms such as Orthopaedics, Breast, General Surgery, Plastics, and Urology with future developments including a robot to support urology cancer delivery on site. 

This multi million pound investment into both estate and workforce will bring 50 weeks of elective surgical activity to the site to support timely delivery of surgical care. We are looking for workforce that are dynamic thinkers, have the patients’ best interests at heart and can work in the perioperative environment. 

As part of the support team we are looking to recruit  sterile services operatives who will be based at both APH and CGH sites to provide decontamination of instruments and equipment.

The unit comprises of a friendly and supportive team of around 30 members. We work in a purpose built,  self contained unit which is certificated to ISO 13485 and Medical Devices Regulations 2002

The work includes manual handling and the wearing of PPE. Full training will be given to the successful candidate to ensure they can work effectively and safely within the team.

Staff may be expected to work occasional shifts in Endoscopy Decontamination Unit, Clatterbridge site. Full training will be given on duties.

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training

Essential criteria
  • Possess or be willing to complete an Apprenticeship related to Sterile Services
  • Possess basic qualification in Maths and English (such as functional skills)
  • Ability to retain a wide range of work procedures and practices
  • To continually develop and maintain a portfolio of evidence of training and CPD activities

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to demonstrate and use Sterile Services equipment and methods of decontamination
  • To comply with the Department’s training programme and undertake training in line with the development of the post, as agreed with line manager
  • To communicate with customers, understanding the importance of their requirements
  • Understand and apply all Health and Safety, COSHH and Risk Management regulations
  • Knowledge and understanding of manual handling and have the ability to apply this when handling heavy loads
  • Knowledge and understanding of infection control and its application within the workplace
  • To assist in the training of other decontamination personnel to perform tasks as directed by the Decontamination Technician Supervisors
