Job overview

This newly created post is an exciting opportunity for a suitably qualified clinician to join our Emergency Medicine Service at Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. 

The successful candidate will provide senior clinical input to the Emergency Department and will join an existing team of 16 Emergency Medicine Consultant in addition to a wider multi-disciplinary team covering  Arrowe Park Hospital. 

Applicants must be fully registered on the UK General Medical Council’s Specialist Register or within 6 months of anticipated CCT/CESR date.

Main duties of the job

The 10 PA job plan will normally include 1.5 PAs for supporting professional activities. The job plan includes 1 in 5 weekends: shop floor cover until midnight.

Professional Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Higher qualification of FCEM or equivalent (currently held or expected within 6 months of the date of interview)
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council
  • Named on the Specialist Register in Emergency Medicine or within 6 months of achieving CCT at time of interview2
Desirable criteria
  • Higher qualification in a related specialty (e.g. MRCP)
  • Dual Specialist registration in a related specialty (e.g. Paediatric Emergency Medicine, Acute Medicine etc.)

Clinical Skills and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Wide clinical experience in Emergency Medicine
  • Competent in the full range of Resuscitation and Advanced Life Support Skills
Desirable criteria
  • Formal training in extended Emergency Medicine skills such as advanced airway skills, USS etc
  • Experience in clinical skills complementary to emergency medicine e.g. pre-hospital medicine, sports medicine etc.

Audit

Essential criteria
  • Proven experience of clinical audit
Desirable criteria
  • Proven use of audit as tool to manage a change in clinical practice

Research

Essential criteria
  • Sound knowledge of research principles
  • Ability to critically appraise medical literature and relate to current practice
  • Commitment to Evidence Based Medicine
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of research, particularly the conduct of clinical trials
  • Publication in peer-reviewed journals

Management

Essential criteria
  • Broad managerial experience in all aspects of day-to-day Emergency Medicine
  • An understanding of NHS management structure and management responsibilities of consultants
Desirable criteria
  • Attendance at an appropriate management course
  • Proven managerial experience
  • Evidence of implementing change

Other Skills

Essential criteria
  • Provider status on 2 of the following courses: ATLS, ALS & APLS
Desirable criteria
  • Instructor status on one or more of ATLS, APLS and ALS courses
  • Instructor status on the generic instructor’s course

Communication

Essential criteria
  • The ability to communicate and liaise effectively, both verbally and in writing, with patients and colleagues

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • A strong commitment to teaching junior medical staff, clinical nurse practitioners and the wider multidisciplinary team
Desirable criteria
  • Formal training or qualification in medical education
  • Demonstrable experience of coordinating a teaching programme

Teamwork

Essential criteria
  • Able to demonstrate ability to work in and lead a multi-disciplinary team
