Job overview
Applications are invited for an appointment to join the existing team of Consultant Emergency General Surgeons based at Wirral University Teaching Hospital.
The successful candidate will join the General Surgery Directorate with a current team of 4 Emergency General Surgeons and working collaboratively with the current workforce of 12 GI surgeons.
The post will appeal to those who are committed to a career in emergency surgery, those recently having got their CCT but who would like to develop their emergency skills further before going into a particular sub-speciality or indeed experienced surgeons later in the career who would like a new challenge without night time work.
We are looking for enthusiastic surgeons who can adapt and change as part of a team working, to produce a happy, productive and co-operative environment in which they work. The applicant will need to be able to work closely with the GI surgeons already in post who provide emergency cover overnight.
Main duties of the job
The Emergency General Surgeons work through the day from 8am until 8pm when covering the Surgical Emergency Unit (SEU). A typical day will involve 8am hand over from the GI surgeon who was on call overnight. The emergency work is then split between emergency general surgeons working collaboratively, including the ward rounds on SEU and surgical ward, ambulatory clinic and emergency theatre cover and operating. Hand over to the GI surgeon for the night is at 1730 – 1800hours. The on-call GI surgeon oversees the emergency theatre from 1730hours. There is assigned time for SPA and admin.
