Job overview

Applications are invited for an enthusiastic registered Specialists in Paediatric Dentistry to join our Community Dental Service, part of the  Specialised Dental Service of Wirral Community Health & care NHS Foundation Trust .  The role is a bank role and is to support the provision of paediatric exodontia under general anaesthesia.  Previous experience of this is essential.  Available sessions will be Saturdays + possibly some in hours work.    

The Specialised Dental Service provides both Community Dental Services and PDS services at several sites across the Wirral area and may include treatment on a domiciliary basis

Many patients have  complex needs and may be referred to the service for one-off courses of treatment or may be cared for on an on-going basis within the service.  

The role may  include supervision and training of dental professionals in training.  Previous experience in this field is advantageous.

You should be confident, be able to work under pressure and have the ability to communicate with staff at all levels throughout the organisation.

Candidates must hold a recognised dentist qualification, be registered with the  GDC and must hold a performer number on the National Performers List in England. They should be registered on the GDC specialist list as a Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry.  This should be confirmed in your application.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide paediatric exodontia under general anaesthetic.  
  • To ensure that the service delivery of special care dental services within the Specialised Paediatric Dental Services is in line with National and Local guidance
  • To provide training and support for dental professions in training, including  undergraduate dental professionals and dentists in foundation training , dental core training and Specialist training.

Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • BDS (or equivalent)
  • A postgraduate qualification in Dentistry
  • Full GDC registration with entry on the GDC specialist list in Paediatric Dentistry
  • Inclusion on an appropriate Dental Performers List
  • Membership of a Defence organisation
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate certificate in sedation
  • Formal qualification in clinical teaching
  • Knowledge of Dentally dental software

Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Comprehensive clinical experience in Paediatric Dentistry with post qualification work in hospital and community environments
  • Experience of and competence in the management of patients with complex Paediatric Dentistry problems
  • Understanding and experience of the management of patients with multidisciplinary problems, both dental and / or medical and liaison with other dental, medical and other specialist colleagues
  • Wide experience of working with GA in hospitals and use of appropriate sedation techniques
  • Experience of teaching
  • Experience of supervision
  • Experience of professional and clinical leadership
