Job overview

This is an exciting time to be joining Wirral University Teaching Hospital as we develop our operating theatres into the next stage. There are 25 theatres across two sites. The Clatterbridge site has had four new theatres built in 22/23 and has just been GIRFT accredited as an Elective Hub offering mutual aid to the region. The Sterile Services department play a vital role in the success of the 25 theatres by ensuring instruments are processed in a timely manner.

The Sterile Services Department is on the Arrowe Park site with a stand alone theatre endoscopy decontamination unit on the Clatterbridge site.

You will be part of the team responsible for providing an exemplary instrument sterilisation service for our Theatre equipment. This will include loading often heavy sets of instrumentation into the washing machine through to reassembly and packaging in time for the next procedure. As Supervisor you will also manage the daily staff allocation, take responsibility for loan equipment and allocate tasks as required. You will report to the Deputy Theatre Manager. 

Main duties of the job

  • To organise and prioritise workload to ensure that service needs are met.
  • Compile work rota’s, ensuring all areas are adequately staffed, amending were necessary throughout each shift.  
  • Ensure all documentation is completed in a timely and accurate manner and that relevant information is communicated to appropriate staff.
  • To ensure the day to day provision of a comprehensive decontamination service to the Trust, in accordance with national, local decontamination and ISO standards.
  • Provide training and education to new starters and junior staff.

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training

Essential criteria
  • Possess a general standard of education
  • Extensive experience at assistant level
  • To have completed/be undertaking an appropriate Team Leader/Management Course.
  • Display a knowledge of Sterile Services equipment, it’s use and the methods of decontamination
  • Act as a role model, providing leadership and support

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Understand and apply all Health and Safety, COSHH and Risk Management regulation
  • Knowledge and understanding of manual handling and its application within the workplace
  • Knowledge and understanding of infection control and its application within the workplace
  • Knowledge and understanding of Clatterbridge Hospital Endoscopy Department
