Job overview
- Support the production of comprehensive clinical coded data to fulfil the Trust’s internal and external information requirement
- Deliver accurate and timely clinical coding data by extracting relevant diagnostic and procedural data from case notes and other sources and translating into codes conforming to National Standards (OPCS and ICD)
- Support the provision of a high quality clinical coding service to the Trust to support data quality, clinical audit and information management by ensuring accurate translation of medical terminology
Applications will only be considered from ACC qualified coders (professional qualification - Institute of Health Record and Information Management). You must demonstrate experience of coding across a wide range of specialities for an acute NHS Trust as well as evidence of attending a refresher course in the last 2-3 years.
Main duties of the job
- Provide consistently recorded data to well defined national standards.
- Provide accurate information to support Healthcare Resource Groups in facilitating the Payment by Results (PbR) process within the NHS.
- Demonstrate competency across all Clinical Coding Specialties
- The post holder will have attained the Accredited Clinical Coding Qualification (ACC). This qualification is recognised nationally by Trusts, ISB’s/ CSU’s as an indication of a clinical coders competence around adherence to Clinical Coding guidelines/standards, coding rules and coding accuracy. The attainment of this is seen by providers as a mark of a Trust’s coding quality.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- NVQ level 3 clerical admin or Equivalent experience
- 5 GCSE’s (Grade A to C) in the Sciences/Anatomy/ Physiology (or equivalent) Level 2 or Relevant Experience in an NHS Clinical Role
- Accredited Clinical Coder (ACC) - National Clinical Coding Qualification
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant Clinical Coding Experience in an NHS Acute Trust
- Advanced Knowledge of Anatomical and Physiological Terms
- Enhanced knowledge of medical terminology
- Experience in coding a variety of specialties
