An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Highly Specialised Physiologist in Neurophysiology to join our busy Neurophysiology Department at Whiston Hospital

The Neurophysiology Department at Whiston Hospital consists of a small team of professional who carry out a wide range of specialist tests on both paediatric and adult patients.

The post holder will be a Highly Specialised Physiologist undertaking and reporting on nerve conduction studies for CTS.

Carry out a range of video EEG recordings on both adults and paediatric patients, including routine EEG, sleep deprived EEG, portable EEGs, Ambulatory EEG and home based video ambulatory EEG.

KEY DUTIES

  • Routine/specialised digital video EEGs on a wide range of adult and paediatric patients including   routine, sleep-deprived, ambulatory, and video ambulatory (24/48/72/96-hour recordings) and portable (ITU/HDU/SCBU) EEGs.  This includes patients with psychiatric and behavioural problems and learning difficulties.
  • Review EEGs and produce a factual report on all adult and paediatric EEGs. Maintain a digital archive of all EEGs.
  • Responsible for carrying out/reporting on (physiologist-led) nerve conduction studies clinics and maintaining short waiting lists. Also to ensure that appropriate patients are referred onto the Consultant Neurophysiologist.
  • Maintenance of EEG/EMG/NCS machines and appropriate action taken for any faults discovered. Accurate records are kept of all repairs and services undertaken and services are kept up to date.
  • To ensure delivery of a patient focussed service including care comfort and dignity of all patients.

CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure clinical and professional standards are always met.
  • Maintenance of a good working relationship with all other departments and staff, providing an effective and efficient Neurophysiology service to all users and patients.
  • Alert Medical staff to abnormal results. Discuss technical reports in the absence of consultant.
  • Ensure all Health and Safety policies are adhered to particularly with emphasis on handling of patients with known/potential communicable diseases eg. CJD, MRSA.
  • Ability to communicate complex information in a variety of forms to patients.

 ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintenance of accurate departmental records for all patients.
  • Ensuring relevant data collation monthly.
  • Regularly review/update patient information leaflets.
  • Review EEG/NCS/EMG/AMB/VAMB referrals daily and triage appropriately.
  • Review electronic referrals to the department daily and triage appropriately.
  • Prioritising the daily workload.
  • Regular stock checks.
  • Internal and external ordering
  • Devise information leaflets for patients/parents and medical staff for video ambulatory service.
  • Assist with general admin duties when necessary.

 TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSBILITIES

  • Attend any relevant training courses to extend neurophysiology knowledge.
  • Participate in any relevant regional study days/meetings.
  • Prepare and deliver lectures to Consultants/nurses and other staff on EEGs/NCS.
  • Undertakes training junior doctors/physiologists/nurses/cadets and students on services offered in the Neurophysiology department.

 LINE MANAGEMENT/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in business planning and development of the Neurophysiology service in collaboration with the Manager.
  • Nominate staff for any courses / study days that may be beneficial.
  • Attend any Trust meetings that relate to the Neurophysiology service provisions.

 FINANCIAL RESPONSABILITIES  

  • Regularly review consumables used and attempt to remain within the restraints of the budget by being aware of consumables and expenditure.

 RESEARCH & AUDIT

  • Implement and take part in national /local audit ensuring compliance with professional and local policies and guidelines.

Qualifications

  • BSc in clinical physiology (neurophysiology) or equivalent qualification / experience
  • ANS Part1 and 11 exam or equivalent qualification / experience
  • State Registration – RCCP/AHCS

  • Post graduate qualification MSC or post grad diploma in Neurophysiology or equivalent experience.
  • Management/leadership qualification
