Staff Nurse Neonatal Unit

An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint motivated and dedicated registered nurses and midwives to join our friendly neonatal nursing team.

The dedicated team provide excellent, high-quality care and treatment to sick or premature newborn infants who are admitted to the Neonatal Unit (NNU). 

The NNU has 15 cots, of which two are high dependency and short-term ventilation (up to 48 hours) is provided. There are approximately 350 admissions to the unit annually.

A Neonatal Transitional Care service is currently being established to allow babies to receive care on the postnatal wards to avoid unnecessary separation from mothers.   This service will be delivered by Band 5 neonatal staff who are included in the NNU establishment who will rotate to support this service, working in conjunction with Maternity Support Workers.

Applications are invited from: -

  • Registered Nurses (child or adult) or Registered Midwives who hold a qualification in speciality (neonatal intensive care course 405 or equivalent)
  • Registered Nurses or Midwives with post registration experience working within an acute neonatal setting who are keen to develop and complete the Neonatal Induction Programme and Qualification in Speciality
  • Newly qualified Registered Nurses (child or adult) or Registered Midwives who wish to follow a neonatal career pathway and complete the Neonatal Induction Programme and Qualification in Speciality

To be competent at safeguarding children and implementing the Child in Need and Child Protection procedures as appropriate includes the following skills, competencies, and knowledge: -

  • Be able to recognise child abuse.
  • Be able to document accurately child protection concerns according to Laming recommendations, differentiating fact from opinion
  • Know who to contact / inform / seek advice from; know how to contact them 24 hours a day, seven days a week, know when to contact them according to Trust and Local Safeguarding Children’s Boards policies and procedures
  • Understand the next steps in the child protection process
  • Know when and how to act, when and how to refer and the importance of following up a referral
  • Understand which groups of children are at risk of harm or neglect
  • Know how to share information – in writing, by telephone, electronically or in person
  • Know who to share information with and when, understanding the difference between information sharing on individual, organisational and professional levels
  • Know what to record, how long to keep it, how to dispose of records correctly, and when to feedback or follow up
  • Understand own (and others’) professional roles and boundaries, including the Named professionals, trust managers and social workers
  • Knowledge of the implications of key national document/reports
  • Understand the assessment of risk and harm

Additional KEY DUTIES

  • Understand multi-agency frameworks, investigations, working and child protection assessment processes including the use of the Common Assessment Framework / investigation/working
  • Be able to present child protection concerns in a child protection conference
  • Demonstrate ability to work with families where there are child protection concerns
  • Understand forensic procedures/practice
  • Be able to advise other agencies regarding the health management of child protection concerns
  • Ability to contribute to serious case reviews or individual management reviews
  • Understand child protection investigation and the basics of forensic procedures
  • Aware of Local Safeguarding Children’s Board and its remit
  • Know how to access the child index register.

CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To be professionally accountable, to recognise and address own limitations and practice in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and the Scope of Professional Practice
  • To be a caring, clinically competent (develop clinical competence if newly qualified) registered children’s nurse who ensures patient safety and well-being is always paramount
  • To effectively manage (/ develop the leadership skills over time and as appropriate to effectively manage) the ward as a team leader on a shift basis in the absence of a sister or ward manager
  • To support and advise junior colleagues, students and unqualified staff and supervise the nursing care provided always ensuring safe practice
  • To be responsible for the assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care for all patients always liaising with their families
  • To be responsible for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation, and evaluation of interventions for young people with mental health issues
  • To plan, with the family, at the earliest possible opportunity, the discharge of their child liaising closely with all members of the primary health care team
  • To recognise the importance of the role of the play specialist and involve as necessary
  • To always ensure the confidentiality of patient information
  • To ensure that all unit philosophy, policies and procedures are always adhered to and that any amendments to policies are acted upon immediately
  • To communicate effectively with staff and patients to ensure that the highest possible standard of care is provided to children and their families, and that comprehensive information is documented
  • To ensure the privacy and dignity of patients is paramount and not compromised

 

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To ensure the ward environment is clean, safe, welcoming, appropriate, and child-friendly always
  • To develop an awareness of budgetary control, ensuring that resources are used efficiently and effectively.

 

TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To act as preceptor /mentor to new members of staff, facilitating the achievement of their competencies throughout their preceptorship/orientation period in close collaboration with the ward manager and the nursing team
  • To act as mentor to pre-registration nurses and other students/visitors to the ward ensuring that support and instruction is provided as appropriate
  • To participate in ward teaching programmes, e.g., informal bedside clinical teaching
  • To participate in family education programmes and health promotion opportunities
  • To demonstrate a commitment to personal continuing education.

 

LINE MANAGEMENT/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To be actively involved in the Paediatric Department’s clinical governance agenda by actively assisting as required with:
    • the implementation of quality assurance programmes for the ward
    • the Department’s Audit programme
    • the Department’s Education programme
    • Risk Management procedures
    • ensuring that practice is evidenced-based or in the absence of suitable evidence that it is the best possible practice.

 

  • To attend mandatory training, including Paediatric / Neonatal Life Support and Child Protection/ Safeguarding training according to Trust and local policy
  • To comply with Infection Control Procedures, Health, and Safety procedures, including fire procedures and to ensure that any ward incident is documented and drawn to the attention of the ward manager / team leader immediately or as soon as is practicable
  • To ensure that equipment is handled correctly and is maintained in safe working order and that those using the equipment have had the appropriate training.

 

RESEARCH & AUDIT

  • To participate in any research undertaken in the unit
  • To actively assist in the Department’s Audit Programme
