Mersey & West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals is a busy acute Trust that is committed to delivering the highest quality patient care.

 

We are looking for a highly motivated, forward-thinking,

nurse to become part of our committed team of nurses who work in The Cardiac Diagnostic Centre (Cath Lab).  Here we perform a range of procedures including coronary angiography and pacemaker implantation.

 You must demonstrate previous experience within a Cardiology setting.

Catheter Lab experience desirable but not essential

Successful applicants will require an enhanced disclosure from the

criminal records bureau.

Main duties of the job

To ensure effective nursing input and participation wherever appropriate within the Cardiac Diagnostic Centre.

This involves delivery of patient care on a daily basis. 

Such delivery of care will be given whilst working within a wide range of cardiac nursing and professional guidelines. 

The post requires a degree of flexibility to respond to the changing needs within the department.

1.     To ensure a good standard of nursing care is delivered to patients using the centre.

2.     Have some responsibility for ordering, storing and safe use of drugs within the department, as per trust policies.

3.     Have some responsibility for ordering and control of nursing stock items required to ensure the smooth running of the department.  This will include domestic supplies and medical and surgical sundries.

4.     Carry out daily checks on emergency equipment.

5.     Liaise with other professional bodies and support staff on nursing issues and their application within the centre.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

KEY DUTIES 

  • To ensure a good standard of nursing care is delivered to patients using the centre.
  • Have some responsibility for ordering, storing and safe use of drugs within the department, as per trust policies.
  • Have some responsibility for ordering and control of nursing stock items required to ensure the smooth running of the department.  This will include domestic supplies and medical and surgical sundries.
  • Carry out daily checks on emergency equipment.
  • Liaise with other professional bodies and support staff on nursing issues and their application within the centre.
  • Contribute to policy and practice changes arising from audits, complaints etc.

LEADERSHIP

  • Deputise for sister in their absence, as requested.
  • Act as a mentor for trainees on placement within the centre.
  • Supervise trainees during their period of training in venepuncture

CLINICAL

  • Responsible for assessing, developing and implementing a nursing care programme for patients requiring nursing care within the centre.  This will include assessment of patients prior to undergoing interventional procedures.
  • Collection of blood samples and retrieval of results from patients prior to procedures.
  • Management of patients who may suffer reactions during the use of intravenous contrast.
  • Monitoring and safety of sedated patients during intraventional procedures.
  • IV Cannulation of patients requiring venous access.
  • Monitoring of diabetics undergoing investigations / procedures and quality assurance and maintenance of glucometer equipment used.
  • Assist and participate in other procedures performed on patients in the centre as and when required by medical staff / radiographic staff carrying out the procedure.

TRAINING AND EDUCATION

  • Maintain an up to date CPD portfolio as required for registration.
  • Have a wide range of knowledge of procedures and practices gained through experience.
  • Maintain an up to date knowledge of nursing practice and theory. 
  • Attended training in venepuncture, cannulation and taking of blood samples for cross matching.
  • Should hold ILS/ALS certificate as required to monitor sedated patients.

RESEARCH AND AUDIT

  • Attend regular audit meetings.
  • Take part in any clinical trials and audits.

COMMUNICATION

  • Communicate with patients requiring treatment / examinations required for their well being and deal with anxious relatives.
  • Maintain good communication and liaison with other professionals within the department and also with other departments, to assist in the effective running of the Cardiac Diagnostic Centre.
  • Complete clinical records and documentation.
