Job overview
The Safeguarding Service provides the organisation’s board with assurance regarding the effective discharge of its safeguarding duties in line with relevant legislation and national guidance.
A vacancy has arisen for Children’s Specialist safeguarding Nurse to work within Wirral Community Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust in Cheshire East for 22.5 hours a week.
The post requires good communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to be adaptable, reliable and approachable. You will have strong analytical and leadership skills to be able to provide specialist advice, support and training on all aspects of safeguarding children to all WCHC staff
Main duties of the job
- Assist the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children in taking a professional lead within Wirral Community health and care NHS Trust services on safeguarding and cared for children matters.
- Provide specialist advice, support and training on Safeguarding Children to all WCHC staff
- Promote good professional practice relation to the safeguarding of children
- In the absence of the Named Nurse, ensure senior managers are kept appraised of local performance to safeguard children
- Support the Named and Designated Professionals in ensuring WCHC Trust fulfil their responsibilities for the safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children in accordance with Working Together, 2013, 2023 and the Children Acts of 1989 and 2004.
- Support the Named Nurse to work alongside partners within the Local Safeguarding partnership arena, to deliver partnership requirements in respect of safeguarding children.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The role requires the successful candidate to be able to
- support inter agency responsibilities for Safeguarding and Looked after Children
- provide advice and support to all community staff in relation to safeguarding and Looked after Children
- Deliver the service responsibilities and key performance targets
- Keep appraised of all legislation, National and local guidance in respect of safeguarding and Looked after Children

Qualifications & Professional Training
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse/Registered midwife
- Registered Specialist Community Public Health Nurse or RSCN
- Post graduate qualification in leadership or equivalent experience
- Post graduate qualification in a safeguarding related subject such as supervision
Desirable criteria
- Teaching qualification
Experience and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Minimum of 3 years post registration experience as Health Visitor, School Nurse or RSCN, with significant experience of Safeguarding Children processes
- Experience of providing supervision to staff
- Sound working knowledge of Community Health Care provision
- Sound working knowledge of the legislative framework underpinning children’s health provision and safeguarding children
- Ability to demonstrate appropriate assessment of needs of children and interventions required to safeguard children
- Participation in developments in practice.
- Effective inter-personal skills in order to work with and liaise effectively with health staff and personnel from other agencies
- Ability to prioritise workload and sound personal organisational skills
- Ability to produce clear and concise written reports as required.
- Effective presentation, facilitation and teaching skills
- Able to give sound advice on working with vulnerable children based on in-depth knowledge.
- Ability to make sound judgements regarding the welfare of children, demonstrating confidence in professional view and analysis.
- Ability to plan interagency interventions for children and families.
- Ability to manage potentially hostile, antagonistic or highly emotive atmospheres, disseminating unwelcome information in a sensitive manner.
- Able to undertake responsibility for service developments.
- Experience of offering training to colleagues
