An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and enthusiastic band 5 Clinical Sleep Practitioner to join our expanding Liverpool Sleep and Ventilation Service.
We welcome applications from colleagues who have a particular interest in caring for patients within the respiratory medicine speciality.
Full training will be provided in house for any applicants that lack depth of experience. Annex 21 route is available with the expectation that all training competencies will be completed within.
- 0 - 12 months for CPAP Pickup, CPAP review
- 0 - 24 months to include Actigraphy and basic sleep studies (Limited cardio-respiratory Polygraphy).
On completion of in-house training, it will be expected that successful candidates will complete the Level 6 Healthcare science apprenticeship or Level bridging sleep year.

Main duties of the job
Knowledge and/or management of individuals with sleep related disorders is essential.
The role will include care of patients with both breathing related sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) or obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS).
Thorough history taking is essential, with the ability to perform appropriate clinical examination.
Review patients, set them up with CPAP therapy, review efficacy of this therapy & identify further testing if required.
Patients with OSA or OHS may be of a high clinical risk and the sleep practitioner should identify deterioration, can escalate care when needed and be able to interpret sleep study results.
You will follow both department guidelines, SOPs and AASM guidelines during analysis and review of diagnostic procedures such as Polygraphy and Actigraphy. You will gain knowledge and understanding of more advanced diagnostics within the service (PSG, MSLT, MWT, OSLER).
Once you are deemed competent in all service roles and duties you will assist with student placements and training of new staff within the service. You will assist with department audits, research, and service improvement projects.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
You will use your determination and compassion to care to manage patients throughout their journey from referral, diagnosis, selection of appropriate treatment pathway, holistic assessments, through to long term care and support for those patients who require ventilatory support. This will include reviewing patients in the outpatient and inpatient setting, via telephone or face to face who present with a variety of sleep related disorders.
Knowledge and/or management of individuals with sleep related disorders is essential. The role will include care of patients with both breathing related sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) or obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS).
The Sleep Practitioner will be expected to manage their workload and work closely within the specialist Sleep team. Will be expected to run clinics in a timely manner as per guidelines and service requirements.

- Foundation Degree in Health Care Science
Desirable criteria
- NVQ Level Ill Health and General Healthcare Support
Experience
Essential criteria
- The post holder will have demonstrable experience of working in respiratory and / or sleep medicine
- The post holder will have clinical experience of the assessment and treatment of sleep related breathing disorders, including; CPAP machines and mask interfaces,
- Commencing patients on CPAP treatment and troubleshooting common problems
- Performing and interpreting overnight oximetry and diagnostic home sleep study test.
- The post holder will have experience of working in outpatient clinics.
