Clinical Fellow

NHS Medical & Dental: Clinical Research Fellow

Job overview

Applications are invited for the position of Fellow in Neurology/Neuroimmunology/Demyelinating disorders with a special emphasis on Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) as part of the nationally commissioned NMOSD service based in Liverpool and in collaboration with John Radcliff Hospital, Oxford.

This post is purposely made flexible to suit several groups of applicants, aiming to recruit highly motivated, enthusiastic individuals with a strong research interest. These include someone who has completed their core medical training and is aiming for a career in neurology or specialist trainee in neurology seeking out of programme experience.  Alternatively, it would be an opportunity for someone who is nearing to or has obtained CCT in neurology to obtain subspecialist fellowship experience in neuroimmunological and demyelinating disorders. For appropriate candidates this post is accredited as an Association of British Neurologists MS and non-MS Advanced Clinical Training Fellowship. The skills and knowledge acquired in this job, will allow an aspiring neurologist to learn a variety of skills.  This is a clinical post but there is ample opportunity to be involved in clinical and laboratory research (Neuroimmunology lab /University of Liverpool).

The appointee will be guided and is expected to carry out research. There is a high expectation to be prolific in producing research publications and previous publication experience is highly desirable.

Main duties of the job

Outpatient Clinics:

The clinical service offers specialized outpatient clinics for NMOSD, MS, and other autoimmune neurological disorders, led by Drs. Huda and Hamid with support from NMOSD specialist nurses, therapy teams, and clinical fellows. Fellows may also contribute to general neurology and MS clinics, participate in clinical trials, and join the on-call rota, depending on supervisor discretion and available slots. Outreach work at external hospitals may also be required.

Inpatient Service:

The primary inpatient service is based at The Walton Centre, with additional responsibilities at Alder Hey Hospital for pediatric cases as needed. The NMOSD service serves patients from the Midlands, Northern England, and Scotland, as part of a joint National Service with John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. Responsibilities include inpatient and outpatient diagnostic assessments, developing treatment plans for NMOSD patients, and providing consultations to medical professionals, patients, and their families.

Communication Duties:

Effective communication via email and phone with patients, healthcare providers, and neurology centers is essential to ensure continuity of care.

Research Responsibilities:

Fellows are encouraged to engage in research, with topics to be discussed upon appointment. The role may require travel to hospitals and patient residences, as well as active involvement in audits and the maintenance of the NMOSD database.
