Job overview

The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint an ambitious, highly trained and committed Locum Consultant Neurologist to join our existing team of Neurologists at the Walton Centre for a 12 month fixed-term.

As the UK’s only dedicated neuroscience centre, the Walton Centre provides one of the most comprehensive ranges of neuroscience services in the UK. We serve a population in excess of 3.5 million with a team of over 40 neurologists. We operate a neurology network model from the main hospital in North Liverpool, providing a range of satellite services across Merseyside, Cheshire and North Wales. 

Neurologists at the centre recognise the need to deliver a high standard of service to patients, general practitioners and hospital doctors throughout the area. We provide out-patient clinics, and ward consultations in each general hospital across the region.

Most patients are dealt with entirely in the district general hospitals but referral to specialist clinics in the centre is encouraged where this will add to the quality of care. All in-patient care is provided in the centre.

 

 

 

 

Main duties of the job

Provide general neurological out-patient and consultation service at one or two district general hospitals , in addition to clinics at the Walton, ensuring a high standard of patient care is delivered and achieved at all times. 

There will be an expected commitment to 4-5 clinics each week , there is some flexibility in the job plan , which may be negotiated between the successful candidate and the Trust, in accordance with the service needs of the Trust.

The numbers of patients booked into clinics is variable, but may follow Association of British Neurology guidelines if desired ( as a minimum)

Within your role you will be required to liaison with clinical staff, such as nurses, therapists, neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons and neurophysiologists to support high quality safe care.

Participate in medical audit, appraisal and mandatory training in the Centre.

Participate in Continuing Medical Education, including the “in house” CME. 

Assistance with the preparation of guidelines and protocols.

Participation in the research activities and Clinical Audit.

Undergo annual appraisal at WCFT.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Current GMC registration
  • Specialty certificate exams in Neurology or equivalent
  • MD or PhD research qualification, or equivalent

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Appropriate previous neurological experience
  • Good communication skills
  • Full current driving licence/ability to travel when on call
Desirable criteria
  • Specialist neurological clinical interest and expertise
  • Appropriate number and quality of research publications
