Job overview
Carry out planned preventative maintenance, installation, modification and repairs to Hospital plant equipment and property including all aspects of water related systems and any other appropriate plant or systems, within the Trust’s estate
Main duties of the job
- Be able to modify and manufacture elements of drainage and pipework, as appropriate
- Must be able to work on own initiative and as part of a team, assisting other disciplines, where necessary
- Filling out appropriate documentation
- Have the ability and training to diagnose and repair faults in plant and equipment
- Have the ability to understand the working of the building/construction/maintenance requirements of NHS buildings. Use of Hospital Technical Memorandums, Hospital Building Notes and other documents related to safe operation of Hospital Building.
- The ability to fulfil a requirement to interpret and work from all, drawings, and specifications appropriate to original trade without supervision. Advice on changes required to drawings etc., to keep system up to date following new works
- Ensure stock and materials are ordered to fulfil the need to ensure the maintenance and repair of Trust properties and equipment.
- Be able to instruct others on aspects of own work relating to original trade, including other trades staff, maintenance assistants and contractors
- Learn new techniques with additional training to own trade and that of other trades to enable multi-skilling within the department
- Working with speed and accuracy, use of relevant power, hand tools and fixed machinery, use of fire tools and maintenance of same.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Apprenticeship in relevant core trade with a Minimum of a City and Guilds with advanced craft certificate or BTEC, ONC in relevant building Maintenance Trade
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of relevant industry documentation, e.g. HSG274, ACOP L8 HTM 04- 01
- Health and Safety qualification
- Working at Heights Certificate
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Relevant experience in core trade of plumbing
- Must understand the workings of a Hospital environment in relation to domestic Hot and cold water systems, drainage systems, CT & VT heating systems, chilled water systems, etc…, as well as knowledge of fire compartmentation and the requirement to retain its integrity
- Have good understanding of the relationship of other craftsmen’s work to own work
- • High level of awareness of health and safety as applied to a building and engineering environment
Desirable criteria
- Minimum 3 years’ experience working in a complex Building Maintenance environment in a trade other than core trade
- Basic electrical safety training to be able to fulfil duties without support of other trades
- Understand the working of the mechanical and/or electrical and/or plumbing and/or gas systems in NHS buildings.
