Job overview

Reporting to the Ultrasound Improvement and Training Lead you will be responsible for delivering and coordinating ultrasound education to ultrasound practitioners within the trust including trainee sonographers, midwifes, nurses and medical trainees. Along with specialised clinical ultrasound training you will also be delivering training in ultrasound governance to departments across the trust and supporting them where necessary to improve standards trust wide through peer audit and QA.

It is an exciting time to join the trust who as we aim to be a centre of excellence for ultrasound and ultrasound education. 

Alongside training you will be responsible for performing and reporting on ultrasound examinations to a high standard. 

Main duties of the job

You will work as part of an ultrasound education team lead by by the ultrasound improvement and training lead working closely with the lead sonographer and the team of sonographers within the imaging department to cascade the expertise outside the department across the trust. 

Working with universities and the trust tutors from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists you will arrange formative and summative assessments and create learning plans for all health care professions training in ultrasound.

Act as independent practitioners with full accountability for all actions, with the issuing of ultrasound reports with HCPC registration and a minimum of Post Graduate Certificate in Medical Ultrasound.

Workshops and lectures are delivered throughout the year which you will support and deliver to support the trust wide education.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical  

  1. Performance of clinical ultrasound duties  

  1. Work efficiently without supervision, organising and prioritising work, and liaising with clinics and wards to optimise service.  

  1. Maintain high working standards in clinical ultrasound.  

  1. To participate in multi-disciplinary team working.  

  1. Act as independent practitioners with full accountability for all actions, with the issuing of ultrasound reports.  

  1. To communicate scan findings to patients and clinicians, providing advice on future management when requested 

  1. To address the patient’s health and wellbeing. This includes modification of techniques, involving the manipulation of patient’s and equipment, to obtain diagnostic information.  

  1. To maintain accurate documentation, including production of relevant graphical representation pertinent to the examination, always ensuring patient confidentiality 

Clinical Governance  

  1. To comply with trust Health & Safety policies, including attendance at specified mandatory training sessions.  

  1. To comply with departmental and organisational policies and procedures, including reporting of all accidents and incidents.  

  1. To contribute to the implementation and promotion of quality service, with continuous re-evaluation of working practices and protocol reassessment when necessary.  

  1. Identify potential hazards by monitoring the condition of equipment within the department and reporting any defects in a timely manner 

  1. All employees of the Trust are required to carry out their duties with due regard to the fair access policy and respect the cultural beliefs and customs held by clients and staff.  

  1. To be responsible and update as required all ultrasound policies and SOPs.  

  1. To support the development and maintenance of the trust ultrasound governance framework 

Education, Experience and Research  

  1. To implement and oversee the trust wide ultrasound audit providing support and training to other departments. 

  1. To co-ordinate and deliver ultrasound training and assessment to ultrasound students, medical trainees, nurses and midwives across the trust  

  1. To assist in the on-going clinical competency assessments of ultrasound practitioners within the Trust.  

  1. Act as a mentor to junior sonographers and trainees within the Imaging Department.  

  1. Act as the ultrasound expert within the trust as part of the ultrasound educational team to provided and advice and support to all US practitioners outside the imaging department. 

  1. To participate in the Quality Assurance programme within the trust and train others to perform.  

  1. To plan and deliver CPD ultrasound lectures to a multi-disciplinary audience.  

  1. Create case reports for ultrasound incidents by reviewing the quality of images and reports. 

  1. To demonstrate professional expertise and knowledge acquired through degree and HCPC registration, supplemented by short specialist courses and CPD.  

  1. Participate in appropriate personal development programmes as required and maintain a continuous CPD portfolio.  

Communication  

  1. To always maintain a polite, courteous and professional attitude to staff. 

  1. To maintain effective and efficient communication links within the department and with other divisions, thus promoting a positive image of the department.  

  1. To communicate highly sensitive information to patients and family, with empathy, providing reassurance and understanding.  

  1. To communicate complex clinical and technical information effectively with trainees to facilitate their clinical education.  

  1. Act as a liaison between the Higher Education institutions and the trust.  

Managerial  

  1. To deputise for the Ultrasound Improvement lead at times when necessary due to annual leave or sickness 

  1. To support the Ultrasound Improvement Lead in overseeing the governance framework within the trust wide and presenting reports when necessary. 

  1. Work with Ultrasound Improvement Lead and the senior divisional leads to manage the clinical training requirements of all trainees undertaking ultrasound training within the trust. 

  1. To liaise department managers in order to coordinate and ensure the on-going clinical competency of staff. 

  1. Ensure that all ultrasound policies and SOPs are up-to-date and are based on current evidence.  

  1. Produce an annual ultrasound Training Needs Analysis (TNA).

Qualifications & Experience

Essential criteria
  • DCR or Degree in Radiography
  • DMU/PG Cert/PG Diploma in Ultrasound or equivalent
  • HCPC Registration
  • Involvement in the training of staff in ultrasound to Postgraduate level
Desirable criteria
  • MSc Medical Ultrasound
  • Management or teaching qualification
