We have an exciting opportunity for a 12 month maternity leave cover for Senior Pharmacist Antimicrobials and Infection Control at the Royal Liverpool Hospital.  We are looking for someone who would like an opportunity to utilise or develop their skills in antimicrobial stewardship.

 

The Antimicrobial Stewardship programme is a trust wide service with roles and responsibilities across all directorates to promote the safe and rational use of antimicrobials. The post holder will be based on the royal site in our new hospital where there are strong links with our specialist Infectious diseases units and the school of tropical medicine.

Main duties of the job

Assist the Lead Pharmacist for Antimicrobials, Infectious diseases and sexual health in the development of pharmacy services and medicines management within the trust antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programme.

To provide a safe and effective advanced clinical pharmacy service to clinical wards on the royal site.

Assist the Lead in providing clinical training and supervision, relevant to AMS for all professionals within the trust. To work closely with the antimicrobial stewardship pharmacy team on the Aintree site and work collaboratively with our microbiology leads at Liverpool Clinical Laboratories (LCL).

Lead on OPAT pharmacy services on the royal site and work closely with the hospital OPAT team and community IV teams to deliver this service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To assist in delivery of the Antimicrobial Stewardship strategy on the Royal Liverpool site. 

To develop, manage, implement and audit antimicrobials policies and guidelines across the trust.

Supervises the training of Pharmacy staff in AMS.

Liaise with appropriate health care professionals within Primary Care Trusts to ensure the effective and efficient use of resources across the primary/secondary care interface and where necessary develop relevant protocols.

To work closely with the antimicrobial stewardship pharmacy team on the Aintree site and work collaboratively with our microbiology leads at Liverpool Clinical Laboratories (LCL).

Lead on OPAT pharmacy services on the royal site and work closely with the hospital OPAT team and community IV teams to deliver this service.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BPharm / BSc (pharmacy) / • MPharm / equivalent pharmacy degree
  • Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain examination (MRPharmS)
  • Post graduate certificate in clinical pharmacy, or equivalent experience
  • MRPharmS
Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate Diploma

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable experience in providing a clinical pharmacy service within an acute hospital setting (this may include the pre-registration pharmacy year)
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of working at specialist pharmacist level
  • Previous experience of working in antimicrobial therapy area
  • Experience of using sharepoint or similar IT systems

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Possesses a comprehensive understanding of pharmacy law and professional standards
  • Able to identify own training and development needs
  • Understanding of clinical governance and the role of the pharmacist within the clinical governance agenda
  • Experience of supervision of other pharmacy staff
  • Able to undertake prescription review of complex medication regimens and give appropriate advice to consultants and their teams and other health care professionals
  • Able to take medication histories from patients liaising with GP/other health care professionals when necessary
  • Able to identify patients who need additional help with their medication and provide appropriate counselling
  • Able to prioritise patients for early discharge
  • Experience in the delivery of education and training to pharmacy staff and other health care professionals
  • Knowledge and experience of multi-disciplinary and pharmacy led audit
  • An understanding of critical appraisal of clinical papers to assist in the evidence-based evaluation of treatments and production of prescribing guidelines
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of monitoring and analysing drug use and expenditure information
  • Previous input into clinical governance issues
  • Development and completion of successful audit projects, with feedback and successful implementation of change
  • Experience in the production of evidence-based prescribing guidelines

Essential criteria
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to convey highly complex information which may be challenged by other members of the healthcare team
  • Able to negotiate with and influence members of the multi-disciplinary team to Consultant and Speciality level
  • Able to communicate with patients regarding prescribed treatments providing both verbal and written communication and to motivate and reassure patients regarding their treatments
  • Able to perform complex pharmaceutical calculations and design drug regimens
  • Able to apply evidence-based medicine to prescribed regimens and balance the risks and benefits of the prescribed treatments for the individual patient
  • Ability to identify clinical risk in medicine usage
  • Able to interpret physiological and pathological data for individual patients and advise modification to patient’s medication accordingly
  • Knows own limitations and when and who to refer to for advice
  • Identifies and prioritise own workload on day to day basis
  • Ability to delegate tasks
  • Able to work alone and within a multidisciplinary team
